August 12, 2026 - Bronx - Randy Arozarena went deep in the first. Julio Rodríguez followed him. Yankee Stadium was 3-0 Seattle before Will Warren recorded a second out, and for a while it looked like another night where the New York Yankees would spend eight innings chasing a hole their starter dug in fifteen minutes.
They did not stay in the hole. Trent Grisham hit two homers and a go-ahead double. Spencer Jones doubled in three. The Yankees won 10-5, their first double-digit night since July 9 at Tampa Bay, and the Seattle Mariners fell to 1-6 on a skid that has them nine games under .500.
Three homers off Warren, and a comeback that started ugly
Arozarena's two-run shot scored Cole Young. Rodríguez's solo made it 3-0. Dominic Canzone added another homer in the third. Warren allowed three homers, tying a career high, and did not finish the fifth. Four-plus innings, five runs, six hits, four walks. The Yankees won anyway because the lineup refused to treat 3-0 as a final.
Ryan McMahon doubled in Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the second and got thrown out at third on the same play. That is the kind of inning that can feel like a wasted chance. Jones made the next one count. He doubled in Austin Wells and Ben Rice in the third. 4-3, Seattle still in front, and the park had a game again.
Josh Naylor singled in Arozarena in the fifth. 5-3. Then Grisham, leading off the bottom of the fifth, hit Bryce Miller to right for his 14th homer. Jones doubled again. Rice scored. 5-5, and Miller's night was still officially a quality-start candidate on innings alone. Six innings, five runs, seven hits. The line does not look like a quality start. It looks like a pitcher who lasted long enough for New York to catch him.
The seventh that finally put Seattle away
Gabe Speier came in for the seventh and walked into the inning the Mariners could not afford. George Lombard Jr. reached. Grisham doubled him in. 6-5. Rice singled through the left side, the ball skipping over Colt Emerson, and Grisham scored. Seattle intentionally walked Heliot Ramos. Chisholm walked with the bases loaded. 8-5.
Paul Blackburn had already picked Naylor off first to end the top of the seventh. That out mattered more than a hold usually does. The Yankees took the lead in the bottom of the seventh for the second straight night, and Speier took the loss.
Grisham was not finished. Lombard reached again in the eighth. Grisham hit Nick Davila to right-center, a two-run shot, his 15th homer and his ninth career multi-homer game. 10-5. Brent Headrick struck out the side in the eighth. The ninth was cleanup.
Jones in the three-hole, Rice everywhere else
Jones started in the three-spot for the second time and finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI, a steal, and a hit-by-pitch. That is a rookie night that changes how a lineup card looks on Thursday. Rice went 2-for-4 with a double, three runs, an RBI, and a steal. Lombard scored twice. The Yankees had 13 hits and did not need a clean start to get to 10 runs.
Seattle had three homers and still lost by five. Arozarena, Rodríguez, and Canzone all went deep. Cal Raleigh walked twice and did not drive anyone in. The Mariners are 56-65. They have lost six straight for the first time since May 2022, and 15 of 20. That is not a bad week. That is a club sliding out of the season.
Warren will get another ball. He has to. New York is 68-52 and still has a rotation that cannot keep handing the lineup a 3-0 deficit in the first inning and expecting Grisham to hit two more. Wednesday was the night the lineup covered for him. Those nights run out.
What 10 runs actually bought
The Yankees reached double digits for the 11th time this year. They did it after trailing by three in the first and by two in the fifth. I am less interested in calling it a statement win than in the simpler read: Grisham, from the leadoff spot, was the entire middle of the game. Solo homer to tie. Double to take the lead. Two-run homer to end it.
Logan Gilbert faces Max Fried in the Thursday finale. Seattle needs a clean start and a stop. New York needs Warren's next outing to look less like the first four innings of this one.
AthX Engine angle
The Yankees finished with 18 AthX Engine team fantasy points, second on the Wednesday board behind only Chicago. Grisham's 16 hitting fantasy points sat second among all hitters on the slate. Jones and Rice each had 9. Seattle finished at -1 team fantasy points despite three homers, because five runs against a club that scored 10 will bury the team column.
