Orioles 10, Yankees 2: Alonso's 43rd, an Inside-the-Parker, a Rout

The wind, then Alonso, then a ball Jones did not catch

September 25, 2026 - Bronx - CC Sabathia stood on the infield before first pitch and looked at the Monument Park plaque that will hang for him. The MLB recap noted an obscure line the plaque does not mention: Sabathia had allowed the most recent inside-the-park home run at Yankee Stadium. Nine innings later, Jeremiah Jackson had the new one. The Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 10-2 in the opener of a single-admission doubleheader.

Cloudy. 69 degrees. Wind 17 mph in from left. First pitch 4:05 p.m. The game lasted 2 hours, 46 minutes. Baltimore had 13 hits. New York had nine. Baltimore made one error. The Yankees made none. The score still sat 10-2.

Pete Alonso homered twice, his 42nd and 43rd, and took the American League lead. Dylan Beavers hit a grand slam, his eighth. Jackson's inside-the-parker was his 10th homer. The Yankees learned during the afternoon that they will face the Boston Red Sox in the American League Wild Card Series at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, confirmed when Boston beat the Cubs in a Fenway opener.

"I'm pretty sure the wind was playing with it a little bit," manager Aaron Boone said of Jackson's drive, per MLB.com. "It looked like it was off the end of the glove and ricocheted in a funny way. I think if he gets the right read and route, he probably makes the play."

Beck's seven, Suárez's four zeroes

Brendan Beck (the loss, 0-2) lasted five innings: six hits, seven earned, three walks, eight strikeouts, two homers, 97 pitches. Alonso's two-run shot to left in the third scored Beavers. 2-0. The fourth finished him as a competitive start. Coby Mayo scored on Christian Franklin's single. Beavers then hit a grand slam to right-center. Colton Cowser scored. Franklin scored. Carlos Narváez scored. 7-0. Amed Rosario singled Heliot Ramos home in the bottom half. 7-1. That was New York's first run.

Jackson's inside-the-park homer in the sixth made it 8-1, a sharp fly to right-center that cleared Spencer Jones' head. Alonso's second homer, to left-center in the seventh, made it 9-1. Gunnar Henderson singled Franklin home in the eighth. 10-1. Paul Goldschmidt lifted a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Spencer Jones scored. 10-2.

Trevor Rogers started as the opener and threw four innings: five hits, one earned, no walks, four strikeouts, 55 pitches. Albert Suárez (the win, 3-0) threw four after him: three hits, no runs, no walks, five strikeouts, 58 pitches. Alex Hoppe allowed the ninth-inning run. Yerry De los Santos allowed Alonso's second homer and Jackson's homer through two. David Bednar walked two in a scoreless-looking ninth that still gave up the fly. The Yankees used four arms and still watched 10 runs.

Thirteen hits, and a first baseman who took the league lead

Alonso went 3-for-5 with two homers, two runs, and three RBI. Beavers went 1-for-4 with two walks, two runs, four RBI, and the slam. Franklin went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Henderson went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Cowser went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and a run. Christian Encarnacion-Strand went 2-for-5 with a double. Jackson's homer was the one the building will remember, even if Alonso's 43rd is the one the leaderboard will keep.

Ramos went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run. Anthony Volpe went 2-for-4. Rosario had two hits and the RBI. Ben Rice went 1-for-5 with three strikeouts. The Yankees left nine on. They are 92-68 after the opener. They won the nightcap 6-3. Friday's first game was the one that did not look like October.

"It's been in the works here for the last month or so," Boone said of the Red Sox matchup. "Obviously a tremendous rivalry, and a team that's had a resurgent season after a really difficult start. I think they're really good; I've felt that way all year. I'm also real confident that if we play our game and pitch like we're capable of, we've got a good chance to move on. We've got to play our best starting Tuesday."

Baltimore is 79-81 after the opener (79-82 after the nightcap). The Orioles did not punch a ticket. They did take the first game of the Yankees' last series before the postseason and hand Alonso the AL homer lead. Beck had eight strikeouts. He also had seven runs. The wind played with Jackson's fly. Alonso did not need the wind. He hit two of them over the wall the ordinary way.
