Mariners 2, Athletics 0: Woo's Eight Innings, One Hit

September 6, 2026 - Seattle - Bryan Woo retired the first nine Athletics. Then Henry Bolte singled to lead off the fourth. That was the hit. Woo did not allow another one.

The Seattle Mariners beat the Athletics 2-0 at T-Mobile Park on a sunny Sunday. Woo threw eight innings, one hit, two walks, nine strikeouts, 102 pitches. Cal Raleigh and J.P. Crawford singled in the only two runs in the fourth. Andrés Muñoz threw a clean ninth for his 25th save.

Eight innings that barely needed a second look

Woo (11-9) had not thrown eight innings all year. Sunday he did it on 73 strikes. Nine groundouts, one fly ball. The Athletics put 27 batters up against him and left with Bolte's single and two walks to Donovan Walton. Jeff McNeil, Zack Gelof, Lawrence Butler, and Alika Williams never found a barrel. Woo struck out the side of the order he needed to and let the infield do the rest.

Bolte stole second after the single. Butler grounded out. That was the threat. Woo walked Walton in the fifth and the eighth and stranded both. The rest of the afternoon was first-pitch strikes and a fastball that still played in the seventh and eighth. Longest outing of his season. One hit. The pitching card on a 15-game Sunday starts and almost ends here.

Gage Jump (6-10) took the loss. Four innings, six hits, two earned, seven strikeouts, no walks. He was not wild. He was one inning short of matching Woo's quiet. Seth Johnson then struck out four of six Mariners in two innings. The Associated Press noted seven straight Seattle batters went down on strikes after the fourth. That is a real run of empty at-bats. It did not matter. The two runs were already in.

Five singles, two runs, no homer required

The fourth was five straight singles off Jump. Dominic Canzone started it. Julio Rodríguez followed. Raleigh singled Canzone home. Crawford singled Rodríguez home. Josh Naylor singled to load it. Weston Wilson struck out. Michael Arroyo, a 21-year-old called up from Tacoma before the game, struck out in his debut. Jhonny Pereda struck out. Jump escaped a bases-loaded mess by punching out the next three. 2-0, and that was the scoring.

Randy Arozarena had two of Seattle's seven hits and did not drive in a run. He singled in the first and the eighth and watched both innings die. Raleigh walked in the eighth with two on and Crawford struck out looking. The Mariners left traffic on the field and still won because Woo never let the other side have a second hit.

Arroyo went 0-for-3 in his first big-league game and came out for a defensive replacement. Cole Young and Brock Rodden finished the infield. Debut days in a 2-0 win are supposed to be footnotes. This one was. Woo was the story, and the 21-year-old can live with that.

A 2-0 that the standings still need

Seattle is 67-77. The Athletics are 57-87. This is not a playoff game. It is a Sunday in September where the best pitcher on the field threw eight innings and the lineup needed five singles in one inning to make it count. Muñoz needed 15 pitches. Bolte grounded out. McNeil struck out. Gelof grounded to third. Ballgame.

The Mariners have Monday off, then host Texas. The Athletics open a series against Toronto. Jacob Lopez against Dylan Cease. Sunday's 1-hitter does not repair Seattle's season. It does put Woo at 11-9 with a 4.03 ERA and a start you can hand to anyone who asks what he looks like when the pitch count is allowed to breathe.

I am not dressing two runs up as an awakening. I am saying eight innings and one hit is the version of Woo that made him a rotation piece in the first place. The lineup did just enough. Muñoz closed it. T-Mobile went home happy on a 2-0.
