Mariners 19, Athletics 1: Five Homers and 23 Hits in Sacramento

Nineteen runs, and the A's never caught the first one

September 12, 2026 - West Sacramento - Dominic Canzone hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and the Seattle Mariners never let the Athletics back into the night. By the time Bryan Woo handed the ball over, Seattle had already scored nine. The rest of Sutter Health Park was a parade. The Associated Press called it a 19-1 shellacking and the Mariners' largest margin of victory.

Partly cloudy, 78 degrees, wind 12 mph out to left. First pitch 6:40 p.m. Attendance 10,289. The game lasted 2 hours, 47 minutes. That is a short night for 19 runs and 23 hits. Seattle had not put up that many hits since 2004, the AP recap said, and had not scored 19 since 2012. Five Mariners finished with three or more hits, tying a club mark from August 22, 2001, against Detroit.

The Mariners are 70-79. The Athletics are 60-89. One of those records looks like September. The other looks like a box score that ran out of innings.

Jump lasted two. The homers did not wait.

Gage Jump (6-11) lasted two innings, five hits, five runs, one walk, two strikeouts, 44 pitches. The AP recap said he left with left shoulder soreness. The first inning already told you the shape.

J.P. Crawford reached. Canzone then homered to right-center, his 22nd, Crawford scoring. 2-0. That was enough for some clubs on a Saturday in Sacramento. Seattle was just opening the lineup card.

The second ended the argument. Weston Wilson reached. Crawford reached. Randy Arozarena then hit a three-run drive to left-center, his 23rd. 5-0. Jump was done after two. Seth Johnson inherited a mess that was already a five-run hole and still could not keep Wilson and Arozarena from singling in the fourth. 7-0.

Joey Estes never found a clean inning either. Josh Naylor and Cole Young were on in the fifth when Young hit a two-run homer to right-center, his 17th. 9-0. The Athletics had one run on the board, and it was unearned.

Arroyo's first, then Crawford, then the eighth would not stop

Michael Arroyo had not hit a major-league homer. He did it in the seventh, a solo shot to left-center, his first. Wilson was still on when Crawford followed with a two-run drive to center, his 11th. 12-1. Estes lasted three innings, seven hits, five runs, one walk, one strikeout, three homers. The night had already left him.

Yunior Tur and Carlos Cortes tried the eighth and ninth. Victor Robles reached. Julio Rodríguez reached. Naylor doubled Robles home. Young singled Rodríguez in. Arroyo singled Brock Rodden home. Lazaro Montes walked with the bases loaded and Young scored. 16-1. Four runs, and the Athletics still had to pitch the ninth.

Cal Raleigh and Rodríguez scored on Young's two-run single in the ninth. Arroyo's sacrifice fly brought Rodden in. 19-1. Young finished 3-for-6 with five RBI. Arroyo went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, a walk, and three RBI. Wilson went 5-for-6 with a double, three runs, and an RBI. Rodríguez had three hits. Naylor had three. Arozarena drove in four. Crawford scored three times and drove in two.

The lineup did not need a hero. It needed a turn.

One unearned run, and Woo's night against this club

Woo (12-9) worked six innings, three hits, one unearned run, two walks, five strikeouts, 80 pitches. The run scored in the third on Shea Langeliers's forceout, Henry Bolte coming home after Woo's throwing error. Langeliers had been activated from the 10-day injured list before the game, the AP recap said, after July 28 surgery to repair a torn right meniscus. He went 1-for-3 with that RBI. The rest of the Athletics order was quiet. Lawrence Butler went 0-for-3 with a walk. Jonah Heim singled. Nobody else found a second hit that mattered.

The AP recap noted Woo has a 1.78 ERA in 12 career starts against the A's, the lowest by a Seattle pitcher against any opponent in franchise history (minimum 10 starts). Saturday was not his prettiest line. It was still the kind of start that lets a 19-run night stay a pitching story for six innings.

Cooper Criswell, Hoby Milner, and Michael Rucker threw a scoreless inning each. Seattle left nine on and still scored 19. The Athletics left eight on and scored one. Team RISP: Mariners 9-for-15, Athletics 1-for-5.

Seattle sends Bryce Miller (4-9, 4.22) against Jacob Lopez (6-4, 4.78) on Sunday. The Mariners sit five games behind Houston in the AL West. A 19-1 in Sacramento does not rewrite September. It does tell you what this lineup can do when the first homer lands in the first inning and nobody on the other side can find the next out.

AthX Engine after the baseball
