Angels 3, Astros 1: Klassen Throws Seven Scoreless on One Hit

August 18, 2026 - Houston - George Klassen let Jose Altuve single in the first and then did not let anyone else get a hit for six more innings. Career-high seven innings. Career-high seven strikeouts. Fifth career start. The Los Angeles Angels beat the Houston Astros 3-1 at Daikin Park, and the AL West leaders lost a third straight.

Josh Lowe homered. Nolan Schanuel drove in a run and scored one. Zach Neto doubled Schanuel home. Ben Joyce threw a scoreless ninth for his third save. All three Angel runs came with two outs. Houston got three hits all night. One of them was Altuve in the first. One was Cam Smith's homer in the eighth. The third did not matter.

Altuve, then nothing

Isaac Paredes walked with two outs in the first. Altuve singled. Klassen struck out Daulton Varsho. That was the only Houston traffic that felt real until Paredes walked to start the fourth. Klassen walked Altuve with nobody out in the seventh, then retired the next three, two on strikeouts, and his night was over: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K.

Cristian Javier (1-4) lasted four innings, five hits, two runs, Lowe's homer. Wade Meckler scored the first Angel run on Schanuel's two-out single in the third, Mike Trout to third. Lowe's 10th homer in the fourth went 345 feet to left. 2-0. Neto doubled to shortstop in the fifth, Schanuel scoring. 3-0. Two outs, three times, three runs.

Smith in the eighth, Joyce in the ninth

José Fermín inherited a 3-0 game and a hold. Smith hit a 415-foot solo shot to left with nobody out in the eighth, his 17th. 3-1. Ryan Watson got the last two outs of the inning. Joyce faced three in the ninth, two strikeouts, the save. The Astros are 63-63. Third straight loss. The Angels are 50-76 and just took a one-hit-through-seven start into the building of the club leading the West.

Houston used five pitchers. Bryan King let Schanuel's run in. Enyel De Los Santos and AJ Blubaugh kept it 3-1. None of that undoes seven scoreless from a rookie who had never thrown seven in the majors. The only hit he allowed was Altuve. The only run Houston scored was after he left.

A 3-1 that owned the pitcher board

Milwaukee scored 22. Klassen still led every pitcher on the AthX Engine board. That is the point of a night like this. Team fantasy points were 8. Pitching fantasy points were 28. A 3-1 in Houston against the division leader is not a 22-0. It is the other Tuesday story: a fifth-start rookie throwing seven zeros on one hit.

I would not crown Klassen the rotation's ace after one Daikin Park card. I would say this: seven innings, one hit, seven punchouts, two-out runs from Schanuel, Lowe, and Neto, and Joyce closing it is how a 50-76 club steals a series game in August. The Astros have to stop losing three in a row to clubs that are not in the race. Klassen does not care about that sentence. He threw seven.

Joyce will take the third save. Lowe will take the 10th homer. Trout was on third when the first run scored and did not need to hit one out. The night was the right-hander who decided Altuve could have the single and nobody else could have anything.
