Yankees 2, Mets 0: Schlittler's One-Hitter and a Subway Series Split

One hit through six, and a comebacker off the hamstring

September 13, 2026 - Bronx - Cam Schlittler took the major league ERA lead and combined on a three-hitter. Ben Rice homered on the first swing that mattered. The New York Yankees beat the New York Mets 2-0 and took two of three in the Subway Series. A day after the Mets hit six homers in the same building, they did not score.

Rain, 72 degrees. First pitch 1:56 p.m. after a 21-minute delay. Attendance 45,508. The game lasted 2 hours, 25 minutes. Two homers. Three hits a side. Schlittler walked off after a 111.5 mph comebacker off the back of his right hamstring, the Associated Press recap said, and went straight to the clubhouse.

The Yankees are 86-63. They lead the AL wild-card race and trail Tampa Bay by four in the East, the AP recap said. The Mets are 69-80 and 22-14 since the August 3 trade deadline.

Rice's 38th, Wells's 11th, and 4 2/3 hitless

Rice led off the first with his 38th homer, a fly ball to right off Christian Scott. 1-0. Austin Wells ended an 0-for-20 slide with a third-inning drive into the right-field second deck, the AP recap said, his 11th. 2-0. That was the Yankees' offense. Three hits. Two of them homers. Spencer Jones had the other single. They left three on and did not need a fourth run.

Schlittler (14-6) went six: one hit, no runs, two walks, eight strikeouts, 94 pitches. The AP recap said it was his 21st start this year allowing one run or none, and that the only other pitcher 25 or younger with more in the last 110 years was the Angels' Dean Chance with 22 in 1964, according to Major League Baseball. His ERA dropped to 1.945, below Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski at 1.952.

He threw 4 2/3 hitless innings before Brett Baty doubled off the right-field wall on pitch 73. The Mets went 0-for-11 against his fastball, the AP recap said. He struck out Francisco Lindor twice on fastballs, including a high fastball for a swinging strikeout in the sixth. He also fanned Juan Soto on a check swing with a 98 mph fastball. Soto stood with both hands on his hips.

The last batter of the outing was Bo Bichette. The comebacker hit Schlittler in the hamstring, deflected to Wells, and ended the inning. Schlittler walked off. He did not come back.

Scott's six innings, and a 14th shutout

Scott (4-5) matched him longer than the score suggests. Six innings, three hits, two runs, two walks, seven strikeouts, 82 pitches, both homers. Rice and Wells were the damage. Everybody else made outs. Aaron Judge struck out three times. The AP recap said he is 3-for-17 since returning Tuesday from a broken rib.

Austin Warren and Nate Lavender each threw a scoreless inning after Scott. The Mets had three hits: Baty's double, Bichette's single, Francisco Alvarez's single. They left five on and went 0-for-the-afternoon with runners in scoring position. A day after a 12-2, they were blanked for the 14th time.

Brent Headrick threw a scoreless seventh, his 76th appearance, the AP recap said. Paul Blackburn threw a scoreless eighth. David Bednar finished the ninth for his 34th save in 37 chances. Each team had three hits. The Yankees' 14th shutout was a two-run game that never felt like one after Wells went deep.

A wild-card lead, a hamstring exit, and Minnesota on Monday

The AP recap said the Yankees were in position to clinch their ninth postseason berth in 10 seasons depending on other results Sunday, and that they are closing in on a record 61st postseason trip. A 2-0 with Schlittler on the mound is how a club with 86 wins spends a rainy Subway Series finale. The hamstring is the sentence that follows. He completed six. He did not throw a seventh.

Monday is Will Warren (10-6, 4.05) at Minnesota against Dean Kremer (3-5, 5.65), the AP recap said. The Mets open against Baltimore at Citi Field, Jonah Tong (2-1, 4.80) against Brandon Young (9-4, 3.71), in Pete Alonso's return to Queens. New York took two of three from New York. Schlittler's ERA lead is the number. The 2-0 is the result. They are not the same story, but they showed up in the same box score.
