Tigers 6, Guardians 4: McGonigle Drives in Three, Detroit Keeps Rolling

August 11, 2026 - Detroit - The Detroit Tigers had lost all six games to Cleveland this season before Tuesday. A four-game sweep in May. A two-game sweep in June. Division rivals owning the head-to-head.

Kevin McGonigle changed the ledger with a two-run double in the fifth and an RBI single in the seventh. The Tigers beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-4 and moved 1 1/2 games ahead in the AL Central.

Anderson opened, McGonigle put it away

Drew Anderson worked four innings as the opener, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Chase DeLauter tied it 1-1 in the third with a 424-foot homer to right-center. Spencer Torkelson had given Detroit the lead in the second with an RBI double scoring Riley Greene.

The fifth is where the game turned. Max Clark and Javier Báez singled with one out. McGonigle doubled both home. Gleyber Torres singled in McGonigle. 4-1, and the Tigers did not trail again.

Jacob Waguespack got the win in relief. Tanner Bibee took the loss after 6 1/3 innings and four earned runs.

A Ramírez error, and a ninth that got tight

Detroit added two in the seventh without a big swing. Báez stole third, and José Ramírez dropped the throw at the hot corner. Báez scored on the error. McGonigle singled home Zach McKinstry on the next pitch. 6-2.

Jo Adell homered in the eighth and hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Kenley Jansen loaded the bases, walked Ramírez, and still got Travis Bazzana to bounce out for his 14th save. Cleveland finished 9-for-4 with runners on and still lost. Detroit finished 6-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Eight of 10, and .500 is one game away

The Tigers are 59-60. They have won eight of their last 10 and are one game under .500 for the first time since May 5. Cleveland is 58-62. McGonigle nearly got hit in the head by an up-and-in pitch in the third; the ball hit his bat and his helmet flew off. Scary foul, then a three-RBI night. That is the rookie season in one at-bat sequence.

I am not calling Detroit a division favorite because it finally beat Cleveland once. I am interested in whether McGonigle keeps producing in the middle of a lineup that is winning with pitching, defense, and contact instead of home runs.

AthX Engine angle

Detroit finished with 11 AthX Engine team fantasy points. McGonigle's three-RBI night was worth 6 hitting fantasy points. Adell led all hitters in the game with 9 on a homer and a sac fly. Cleveland finished at 1 team fantasy point.
