Royals 9, Athletics 7: Kansas City Rallies With an Eight-Run Eighth

August 19, 2026 - Kansas City - The Athletics led 7-5 going to the bottom of the eighth, and Max Muncy had just hit a two-run homer in the ninth that would have mattered if the inning had come sooner. It did not. The Kansas City Royals scored eight times before Craig Kimbrel closed it. Final: 9-7.

This was not a tidy game. It was a tradeable one if you like runs, walks, and a bullpen meltdown in the loudest inning of the night.

Oakland builds a lead the Royals erase

Jeff McNeil doubled home Lawrence Butler in the first. Zack Gelof singled McNeil home. 2-0 Athletics. Kansas City answered when Salvador Perez doubled and Vinnie Pasquantino scored in the fourth. 2-1.

Oakland pushed it to 5-1 in the fifth. Nick Bolte singled home Donovan Walton. McNeil singled home Muncy. Gelof grounded into a fielder's choice, Bolte scoring. The Athletics had 11 hits on the night and looked like the team in control.

Pasquantino homered to right in the sixth. 5-2. His single in the eighth scored Maikel Garcia. 5-3. Two outs still to go. The inning had barely started.

The eighth that flipped Kauffman

With the bases loaded, Kyle Isbel singled to left. Pasquantino scored. 5-4. Michael Collins hit a sacrifice fly. Perez scored. 5-5. Tyler Rave doubled to right. Bobby Witt Jr. scored. Isbel scored. Tolbert scored. 5-8. Garcia singled Rave home. 5-9.

Eight runs. Five hits. Three walks. A lead that had felt safe at 7-5 turned into a loss in one half-inning.

Muncy's two-run homer in the ninth made it 7-9. Kimbrel got the final three outs for the win. Oakland outhit Kansas City 11-11 and still lost because one inning erased everything.
