Royals 5, Mariners 0: Stephen Kolek Throws Complete-Game Shutout at Kauffman

The lead

May 23, 2026 - Kansas City - The Kansas City Royals snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-0 shutout of the Seattle Mariners at Kauffman Stadium, as Stephen Kolek threw a complete game on 108 pitches—allowing four hits and one walk with two strikeouts—in his second career shutout, per MLB.com and the Associated Press recap on FOX Sports.

It was the first complete-game shutout by a Royals pitcher since Brad Keller on Sept. 13, 2020, and only the fourth nine-inning shutout in the majors this season. Kolek did not record a strikeout until the eighth inning yet faced just two batters over the minimum thanks to a pair of double plays and weak contact all afternoon.

How the game turned

Kansas City struck in the first. Maikel Garcia doubled and scored on a fielder's choice by Vinnie Pasquantino. Carter Jensen added an RBI grounder and Pasquantino scored on Jac Caglianone's single for a 3-0 lead before Kolek had thrown 10 pitches in a 1-2-3 opening frame.

Jensen's sacrifice fly in the third made it 4-0, and Isaac Collins singled home Jensen in the sixth for the final run. Seattle never seriously threatened after George Kirby (5-4) allowed three earned runs and nine hits in six innings.

Pitching and matchup notes

Kolek (3-0) joined an exclusive list—pitchers since 2010 with two shutouts in their first 23 career starts, per MLB.com—by finishing a game that lasted just 2:06. His reverse splits mattered against a Seattle lineup stacked with left-handed bats; the Mariners managed only four hits and were held scoreless for the sixth time this season.

AthX Engine graded Kolek at 32 pitching FP, the top arm on the Saturday card, and Kansas City at 13 team FP—efficiency over fireworks on a night the offense did just enough early.

Bats that changed the board

Jensen finished with two RBIs and helped set the tone in the first. Bobby Witt Jr. went 2-for-4 with two runs scored; Garcia's leadoff double jump-started the rally Kirby could not escape.

Seattle's best contact came from Luke Raley, who had three of the four Mariner hits, including an infield single—illustrating how little hard damage Kolek allowed even when Seattle put the ball in play.

AthX Engine fantasy angle

A 32 FP pitching line with only two strikeouts shows how AthX Engine credits length, zeroes, and traffic control—not just whiffs. That daily total is separate from trader demand in dynamic pricing.

What comes next

Sunday's series finale pits Seth Lugo (1-4, 3.68 ERA) against Bryan Woo (4-2, 3.51 ERA), per AP probables.
