Orioles 8, Athletics 5: Henderson's Two Homers Flip a 5-1 Hole

Down 5-1 in West Sacramento. Henderson did not stay there.

August 30, 2026 – West Sacramento – Gunnar Henderson homered to center in the first, his 21st. The Baltimore Orioles had a 1-0 lead at Sutter Health Park for about 15 minutes.

The Athletics scored two in the first, one in the second, two in the third. 5-1. Chris Bassitt had already given back the homer and then some. Jeffrey Springs had a four-run lead.

Henderson hit another one in the fifth, a three-run shot, his 22nd. Baltimore won 8-5. The first 5-1 was real. It was also temporary.

Springs' lead, then Mayo, then Henderson again

Lawrence Butler doubled home Henry Bolte and Zack Gelof in the first. 2-1 Athletics. Jeff McNeil doubled Brian Serven home in the second. 3-1. Serven homered to right-center in the third, his fifth, scoring Tommy White. 5-1. Bassitt had eight hits and five earned through 5 2/3. He also got the win, because the next two innings belonged to Baltimore's middle of the order.

Coby Mayo homered to left-center in the fourth, his 19th, scoring Pete Alonso and Henderson. 5-4. One swing, three runs, and Springs' lead was a run. In the fifth, Blaze Alexander and Alonso were on when Henderson went deep to right. 7-5. Springs left after 4 2/3, six hits, seven earned, one walk, six strikeouts. The (L, 3-13) sat next to a night that started 5-1 in his favor.

Henderson was not done. He tripled to center in the eighth and scored Jackson Holliday. 8-5. Four hits. Three runs. Two homers. A triple. Five RBI. He went 4-for-4. That is a full box in one line.

Bassitt survived. Cano finished it.

Bassitt (6-4) struck out four, walked three, and allowed those five runs on eight hits. Josh Walker threw a scoreless seventh. Anthony Nunez got four outs, two strikeouts, no runs. Yennier Cano threw a clean ninth for his third save. The Athletics put nine hits on the board and none of them after the third inning produced a run.

Serven went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI. Bolte had two hits. White doubled and scored. McNeil's double was the second-inning RBI. After Serven's homer, Oakland's lineup went quiet. Kade Morris threw two innings and allowed Henderson's triple. Scott Blewett struck out four in 1 1/3. Brady Basso threw a scoreless inning. The damage was already on Springs' line.

Alonso walked, singled, and scored twice. Mayo's three-run shot was the first punch of the comeback. Alexander scored on Henderson's second homer. Baltimore had seven hits and made them count. The Athletics had nine and spent them before the fourth.
