Two homers from Mayo, and the skid finally ended
September 7, 2026 - Baltimore - Coby Mayo hit a solo homer in the third and a two-run shot in the sixth, Trevor Rogers threw 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-4 at Camden Yards. The Associated Press recap called it a snapped six-game losing streak. The box score called it Mayo's 20th and 21st homers of the year.
Baltimore led 4-0 after three and 6-1 after six. Cleveland made the ninth loud. The Orioles still left with the win.
Cantillo could not find the zone
Joey Cantillo lasted 2 1/3 innings: three hits, four earned runs, five walks, three strikeouts, 72 pitches. Thirty-five were strikes. That is not a start. That is a walk parade with a homer in the middle.
Dylan Beavers doubled Samuel Basallo home in the second. 1-0. Mayo homered to left in the third. 2-0. Blaze Alexander walked with the bases loaded to score Christian Encarnacion-Strand. 3-0. Pete Alonso walked with the bases loaded to score Basallo. 4-0. Franco Aleman inherited the rest of the third and walked two more while striking out two. The inning was a leak Baltimore kept pouring runs through.
Mayo went 2-for-5 with two homers, three RBI, two runs, and two strikeouts. The sixth-inning shot scored Jackson Holliday and made it 6-1. Rece Hinds went 2-for-2 with two walks. Basallo finished 2-for-3 with two runs, a hit by pitch, and a walk. Alonso was 0-for-2 with two walks, a hit by pitch, and an RBI. Baltimore did not need a 15-hit night. It needed Mayo twice and a starter who threw strikes.
Rogers through 7 1/3, then the ninth got expensive
Rogers went 7 1/3: six hits, one run, zero walks, six strikeouts, 104 pitches, 78 strikes. He improved to 10-9. The run was Jo Adell doubling Brayan Rocchio home in the sixth. Everything else was a left-hander who had the Guardians putting the ball in play without damage. Rico Garcia finished the eighth.
Andrew Kittredge started the ninth and did not finish it. Nathaniel Lowe pinch-hit a three-run homer to right-center, his 16th, scoring Adell and José Ramírez. 6-4. Three earned in two-thirds of an inning. Josh Walker came on and recorded the last out for the save. That is a six-game skid ending with a bullpen that almost donated it back.
Adell went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run. Steven Kwan had two hits. Ramírez singled and scored on Lowe's homer. Cleveland is 73-72. A three-run ninth against a team trying to stop a skid is a reminder that this Guardians club still has enough thump to make a 6-1 game interesting. It is also a reminder that spotting Baltimore four runs in three innings is how you lose in September.
The Orioles are 70-75. A six-game skid in September is how a season leaks. Monday stopped the leak. Mayo's two homers were the reason the lead was big enough to survive Kittredge.
Gunnar Henderson went 1-for-5. Hinds never made an out: two hits, two walks. Basallo reached four times. Encarnacion-Strand walked and scored in the third. The Orioles' 6-4 was walks plus Mayo. Cantillo's five walks in 2 1/3 innings were the other half of that sentence.
Cleveland got a clean look from Slade Cecconi (three innings, two runs, three strikeouts) and Daniel Espino (a scoreless inning with two strikeouts). The damage was already on the board. Adell's double in the sixth was the only run Rogers allowed. Lowe's pinch-hit homer in the ninth was the only swing that made the save situation real. Walker threw seven pitches and got the last out. A six-game skid ends that way sometimes: ugly in the ninth, still a W.
AthX Engine after the baseball
AthX Engine credited Rogers with 23.33 pitching fantasy points, second among Monday pitchers. Mayo scored 11 hitting FP on the two-homer night. Baltimore posted 11 team FP, tied for third on the slate with Boston. Lowe's pinch-hit three-run homer scored 8 hitting FP in a loss.
Fantasy points measure what a player did under platform scoring. Share prices still answer to dynamic pricing. Rogers graded the start. The market will decide what that is worth tomorrow.
