Mariners 9, Red Sox 6: Montes Homers in Debut as Seattle Ends Skid

Montes took the long way around. The trident was waiting.

September 1, 2026 – Boston – Lazaro Montes led off the fifth at Fenway and sent Wyatt Olds to center, 407 feet. First big-league homer. First big-league game. He nearly ran through the third-base coach on the high-five, then found the Mariners' golden trident in the dugout.

The Seattle Mariners beat the Boston Red Sox 9-6 and ended a five-game slide. Randy Arozarena had already flipped the night with a three-run shot in the second. Bryan Woo worked six innings with that lead. Seattle 9/14/1. Boston 6/11/0.

Monday was the other Fenway story: Red Sox 9, Mariners 8 in 10, Trevor Story walking it off after two intentional walks. Tuesday was a new box. Same park. New result.

Canzone started it. Páez never got the second inning back.

Dominic Canzone went first. Solo homer to right-center, 406 feet, off Jedixson Páez. 1-0. Mickey Gasper answered in the bottom half, 404 feet to the same neighborhood. Two solo shots. Tie game. Fenway had a 1-1 first inning and no reason yet to think Seattle was about to score in each of the next four.

Then the Mariners scored five in the second.

Josh Naylor was on. J.P. Crawford lifted a sacrifice fly to right, and Naylor scored. Cole Young came around on Brock Rodden's infield single. Montes stood on second. Arozarena turned on one and sent it to left, 382 feet, his 22nd. Montes scored. Rodden scored. 6-1, and Páez was already looking at a first career start that would not last the fourth.

Montes singled Naylor home in the third. 7-1. Julio Rodríguez scored the eighth run in the fourth when Cal Raleigh doubled to left. Montes's solo in the fifth made it 9-1. Two hits. Two RBI. September rosters had just opened, and he was one of the players Seattle added. A debut that will be the clip they play the next time someone asks how he arrived.

Arozarena finished with three RBI. Monday he went 4-for-5 and still left Fenway with a loss. Tuesday he needed one swing in the second. Crawford, Raleigh, and Canzone were on the board too. Rodden drove in Young. Five in the second, then four more before Boston found the late innings.

Woo had a cushion. Boston climbed after the sixth.

Woo (10-9) threw six innings: five hits, one earned run, seven strikeouts, one walk. The earned run was Gasper. The other Boston run in his outing scored in the sixth, when Wilyer Abreu came around on Rodden's throwing error. Woo left with a 9-2 game and a win that moved him to 10-9.

Páez (0-1) lasted 3.2 innings: ten hits, eight earned runs, three strikeouts, two walks. First career start. First decision. Olds inherited the rest of that mess and gave up Montes's homer in the fifth.

Boston still made the ninth interesting. Eli White doubled home Gasper and Connor Wong in the seventh. 9-4. Jahmai Jones pinch-hit in the ninth and hit a two-run homer to left, 420 feet, with Roman Anthony on. 9-6. Fenway stood up. Seattle still had the outs.

A sixth-inning delay sat in the middle of that climb. Home-plate umpire Will Little caught a foul ball under the chin, lost the throat guard, and needed a few minutes before finishing the top of the inning. Ryan Wills took over behind the plate after that. The score did not move on the delay. It moved on White and Jones.

Fourteen hits for Seattle. Eleven for Boston. One error, and it belonged to Rodden. The Mariners scored in each of the first five innings. That is a club that decided the Monday walk-off was not going to become a six-game slide.

Seattle is 65-74. Boston is 75-64. The series is tied 1-1 heading into Wednesday after a walk-off and a 9-6 reply. Bryce Miller (4-8, 4.12) starts the finale for the Mariners. Patrick Sandoval (1-3, 4.20) goes for the Red Sox.

Montes has a Fenway homer in his first game. Woo has a 10th win and a night where the lineup finally gave him room. Páez has a first start he will want to forget. That is Tuesday at Fenway. It is a different box than Monday.
