Three doubles, five times on, and a 10-4 that kept tying itself
September 19, 2026 - Los Angeles - Mookie Betts reached in all five plate appearances and hit three doubles. The Los Angeles Dodgers still needed a three-run fifth to get San Francisco off the board for good. They beat the San Francisco Giants 10-4 at Dodger Stadium, and the game was 4-4 in the fifth before the lineup finally put it away.
Clear. 77 degrees. Wind 7 mph out to right. First pitch 6:10 p.m. Attendance 47,410. The game lasted 2 hours, 53 minutes. Los Angeles had 15 hits. San Francisco had eight and two errors.
"Some guys are hitting, some guys are not," Betts said, per the MLB recap. "I think that's the beauty of the lineup. You get a couple guys going, and a couple guys here can carry a team, and you never know."
Four ties, then Edman and Rojas in the same inning
Betts scored on Max Muncy's double in the first. 1-0. Betts singled Josue De Paula home in the second. 2-0. Victor Bericoto hit his fifth in the third, a 425-foot fly to center, Turner Hill scoring with him. 2-2. Will Smith hit his ninth, a 422-foot fly to left. 2-3.
Jonah Cox's sacrifice bunt scored Andrew Knizner in the fourth. 3-3. Betts doubled Alex Freeland home. 3-4. Jung Hoo Lee doubled Bericoto home in the fifth. 4-4. That was the fourth tie. Tarik Skubal had already thrown enough traffic for one night.
Tommy Edman singled Teoscar Hernández and Kyle Tucker home. De Paula took third on Hill's throwing error. Miguel Rojas singled De Paula home, and Edman was thrown out at the plate. 7-4. The inning that had been 4-4 was a three-run answer with an out at home still attached.
The sixth finished it. Smith singled Betts home after a successful challenge, the ESPN scoring said. De Paula singled Muncy and Smith home. 10-4. Four Dodgers drove in at least two: Betts, Smith, De Paula, and Edman. The MLB recap said it was the fifth time this season Los Angeles had four or more players with multiple RBI, and the second time this month.
Skubal got the win. The bullpen threw the zeroes.
Skubal (11-7) threw five innings. Eight hits. Four earned. Two walks. Three strikeouts. Eighty-six pitches. The MLB recap said it was his most runs allowed since June 24. Shohei Ohtani is on the injured list, and Betts is leading off again. The starter did not have a quiet night. He had a lineup that scored in each of the first six innings.
Evan Phillips, Alex Vesia, Seth Halvorsen, and Edwin Díaz threw a scoreless inning each. Combined: zero hits, eight strikeouts. Yunior Marte (0-1) lasted 4 2/3. Eight hits. Six earned. Three walks. Two strikeouts. One homer. Ninety-seven pitches. Philip Abner and Joel Kuhnel inherited the mess. Duncan Davitt threw 2 1/3 scoreless after the damage was already done.
Betts finished 4-for-4 with three doubles, a walk, two runs, and two RBI. The MLB recap said it was his first five-times-on night since April 16, 2024, his first three extra-base-hit game since July 7, 2023, and his third straight game with at least three hits, matching a career-long streak from July 2021. In September he is slashing .397/.493/.794 with 20 RBI, that recap said.
Smith went 3-for-5 with the homer, two runs, and two RBI. Muncy had two doubles. De Paula walked twice, scored twice, and drove in two. Bericoto went 2-for-4 with the homer, a double, a walk, two runs, and two RBI. Lee doubled in a run. That was San Francisco's night: one swing that tied it at 2-2, and nothing after the fifth.
"I know I'm still capable of it, I know it was in there somewhere," Betts said, per the MLB recap. "So just got to keep on rolling."
A four-game lead for the No. 2 seed, and a rivalry that is still a game apart all-time
Los Angeles is 95-60. The MLB recap said the third straight win kept a four-game lead on the Atlanta Braves for the No. 2 seed in the National League. The same recap had the all-time series at 1,293-1,292, plus 17 ties. Saturday did not change the history by much. It changed the weekend.
San Francisco is 64-91. Bericoto's two-run shot was the loudest piece. The rest was a staff that kept tying a game it could not finish.
Manager Dave Roberts, per the MLB recap, on Betts: "A month ago, he started getting some knocks and some slug, and so he's really built on that. And so now, it just doesn't matter where you hit him, who he's facing, the situation. He's taking good at-bats."
