Braves 8, Nationals 6: Harris and the Middle Order Outslug Washington

April 22, 2026 - Washington, D.C. - If you like tidy pitching duels, this was not your game. The Atlanta Braves beat the Washington Nationals 8-6 in a night that swung on home runs, traffic, and just enough Atlanta separation late.

Washington struck first with power: Jacob Young scored on a Jorbit Vivas double, then Nathaniel Lile launched a three-run homer that also scored James Wood and Luis García Jr., per the ESPN play log, before Atlanta answered. Drake Baldwin led off the game with a homer for the Braves, and Michael Harris II went deep twice, including a second blast that helped rebuild a lead after Washington kept clawing back, per the ESPN play log.

Atlanta’s outfield speed still changes games

Harris was the headline because two homers will always own the room, but the Braves also manufactured runs with sacrifice flies and aggressive turns on the bases. Matt Olson added a key RBI as Atlanta pushed across insurance while the Nationals were still hunting one more big swing.

Washington stayed in it with one more long ball

Tyler Wiemer homered in the fifth to keep the Nationals within striking distance, and James Wood remained in the middle of almost every rally. The problem was volume: Atlanta’s middle order produced too many answers for Washington to ever fully seize control.

AthX Engine fantasy angle

Slugfests like this tend to spike AthX Engine hitter totals on both sides. Harris and Baldwin profile as Atlanta’s top lines, while Lile and Wood carry Washington’s counting stats. Team fantasy scoring still rewards the road win and eight runs for the Braves.

What it meant

For Atlanta, this was proof that the lineup can still win noisy games when the pitching line is merely fine. For Washington, it was another night of real offense that still finished a step short.
