Five hits, seven RBI, and Houston never climbed back
August 20, 2026 - Houston - Zach Neto singled home a run in the first, then kept finding green grass until the box score looked unfair.
He finished 5-for-6 with his 21st homer and a career-high seven RBI. The Los Angeles Angels piled up a season-high 18 hits and beat the Houston Astros 18-3, their highest run total since a 25-1 night against Colorado in June 2023.
Houston slipped to .500. The AL West lead shrank to one game after Texas also won.
The fourth and fifth turned a lead into a rout
Los Angeles led 4-2 after two. Then the fourth inning turned into a conveyor belt. Sacrifice bunts, walks to Wade Meckler and Mike Trout, singles from Neto, Moisés Ballesteros, Vaughn Grissom, Josh Lowe, and Adam Frazier. Six runs. 10-2.
The fifth did not cool off. Nolan Schanuel beat out a potential double-play throw. Neto then drove a four-seamer into the left-center seats for a three-run homer, 428 feet. 14-2. He added a two-run double in the seventh. Denzer Guzman capped it with a two-run shot in the ninth after Houston put an outfielder on the mound.
Peter Lambert (8-7) lasted 3 2/3 and was charged with nine runs on eight hits. It was his worst start of the season against a club that entered the night buried in the West standings.
Rodriguez kept the earned-run line clean
Grayson Rodriguez (4-5) threw seven innings, five hits, two walks, six strikeouts. Both Houston runs were unearned. That is how you post a blowout win when the lineup is already doing the loud work.
The night also had a scare. Meckler took a 90-mph sinker off the helmet in the fifth, stayed down near the plate, then walked off under his own power and exited. Schanuel left in the sixth with right-side soreness. Those are the footnotes a blowout still cannot ignore.
Houston's only late run came on a ninth-inning sacrifice fly. By then the Angels had already set a franchise mark for runs scored against the Astros.
