Then Vaughn Grissom hit a solo homer in the seventh to tie it, Schlittler kept dealing into the eighth, and the New York Yankees scored five two-out runs in the 10th to beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-3.

The headline is the five-run 10th. The story is the first eight innings.

What Schlittler did

Cam Schlittler retired 20 of the first 21 batters he faced Wednesday night. His only blemish through the second inning was a soft single to left by Grissom. After that, he carved through the Angels lineup with a 95-mph cutter and a breaking ball that froze hitters clean.

He struck out nine and walked nobody over eight innings, allowing two runs total. The AL-best 2.04 ERA is not a fluke — Wednesday was his franchise-record 19th start this season with one or no earned runs, moving him ahead of Ron Guidry (1978), Whitey Ford (1964) and Jack Chesbro (1904).

Grissom gave Anaheim its tie in the seventh, drilling a 95-mph cutter over the center-field wall. It was the kind of mistake pitch that ends up in highlight packages. Schlittler didn't allow another one.

Detmers on the other side

Reid Detmers matched Schlittler inning for inning through seven. He struck out eight, walked nobody, and gave up one run on an Amed Rosario RBI double in the fourth. His 1.52 ERA since the All-Star break is the best in the majors over that stretch. A game against the AL's best starter that stays 1-1 through seven is not a failure.

Five two-out runs in the 10th

The Angels brought in Luke Murphy to start the 10th. Jose Caballero singled, the automatic runner held at third, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked. Murphy got Luis Garcia Jr. to pop out, and it looked like the Angels might escape.

Then Austin Wells singled to right to score two. Cody Bellinger singled to center. Trent Grisham singled to left. Ben Rice singled to right. By the time the inning ended, New York led 6-1 on five two-out hits off one reliever.

Michael Fulmer gave up a two-run homer to Moisés Ballesteros in the bottom of the 10th to make it 6-3. David Bednar had already closed the ninth for the win. The final was 6-3.

The game was briefly delayed in the sixth when a line drive off Rice's bat hit a photographer in the camera well at first base. The photographer walked to a medical vehicle and shook Rice's hand before being removed from the field.
