Tarik Skubal struck out nine over seven scoreless innings, walked nobody, and needed 87 pitches (60 strikes). Spencer Torkelson hit two homers and drove in four. The Detroit Tigers blanked the Los Angeles Angels 7-0, per the Associated Press.
Nineteen swinging strikes for the third straight start. Contenders watching. Detroit still deciding what it is before August 3.
Four in the first, then cruise control
Kevin McGonigle doubled. Dillon Dingler took a HBP. Colt Keith singled home a run. Torkelson crushed a three-run shot to left-center. 4-0 before Skubal faced a batter with stress.
Two more in the second. Torkelson's solo in the fifth (420 feet) made it 7-0. Grayson Rodriguez (3-3) lasted four and gave up six. The Angels' skid kept rolling.
Skubal's only jam
O'Hoppe and Mike Trout singled with one out in the sixth. Skubal got Vaughn Grissom to bounce into a 6-4-3. Seventh inning: changeups freezing Soler and Adell, then a comebacker. Bullpen mopped up the last two frames.
He spent the All-Star break working in Detroit instead of vacationing. It showed.
