Obvious buyers are the clubs already priced for October. Likely buyers include a Red Sox team that just ripped 13 straight (longest since 1948). The "who knows" lane is almost entirely American League, and Detroit sits in the middle of it with Tarik Skubal. Likely sellers include the Athletics (already shipping Aaron Civale to the Cubs), Reds, Angels, Cardinals, and Nationals. Obvious sellers: Rockies, Royals, Mets, Giants.

If you only track one name into August 3, track Skubal.

Why Skubal is the AthX pivot

Boston flipped the seller script

Not long ago, the Red Sox looked like a club that might shop veterans and move on. Then they started winning every night.

Thirteen straight, including Saturday's 7-6 grind over Tampa Bay (recap) and Sunday's 6-1 win that made the streak historic for this franchise, pushes Boston into the likely buyer lane. Heavy offseason expectations plus a heater like that usually ends one way: the front office looks for arms and bats, not for exit ramps.

Early sell signal: Civale to Chicago
