Tigers 13, Athletics 1: Dingler Grand Slam, Clark Debuts With Three Hits

A debut, a grand slam, and a West Coast statement

July 31, 2026 – West Sacramento – Max Clark's first big-league hit did not wait for the highlight reel. It arrived in the middle of a road thrashing that kept getting louder.

By the eighth, Dillon Dingler had cleared the bases with his first career grand slam. By the ninth, Ben Malgeri had added his first career homer. The Detroit Tigers beat the Athletics 13-1 to open their longest trip of the season and post the loudest AthX Engine team score on the Friday slate.

Mize scratched. The bullpen still won.

Detroit scratched Casey Mize with the trade deadline three days away. Tyler Holton opened and allowed one run in two innings. Ty Madden followed with three scoreless frames for his first win. The bullpen plan was not supposed to look this calm against a club that still had to face a Tigers lineup full of young bats.

Jeffrey Springs took the loss at 3-11. Four innings. Four hits. Five walks. Two runs. He is 0-11 in his last 18 starts. Sacramento finished July 5-19. Those two sentences explain more than any scouting report.

McGonigle and Clark set the tone early

Kevin McGonigle, another 2023 draft pick, tied the game with a solo homer off Springs in the third and added a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Clark's first career hit helped that fourth-inning rally. The 21-year-old prospect then doubled home a run in the seventh-run eighth and doubled again in the ninth.

Clark became the third Tigers player ever with at least three hits and two extra-base hits in his debut. McGonigle did it earlier this year. Billy Bean did it in 1987. Detroit's farm system did not just visit Sutter Health Park. It took the series opener by force.

Dingler turned a lead into a rout

Luis Morales inherited a game that was already tilting. Dingler ended the debate with a grand slam in the seven-run eighth. Malgeri's two-run shot in the ninth was the final insult. Thirteen runs. Fourteen hits. One lonely Athletics run on the board.

Clark will not forget his first three hits. Dingler will not forget his first slam. Detroit needed both to leave California with more than a bullpen experiment.
