Tigers 11, Mariners 0: Valdez and Dingler Finish What Melton Started

August 6, 2026 - Seattle - Two nights after Troy Melton blanked this park, Framber Valdez made it look like a series plan.

Valdez threw seven scoreless innings, Dillon Dingler homered for a third straight game, and the Detroit Tigers rolled the Seattle Mariners 11-0 to take the series and keep climbing the American League wild-card board.

Valdez's cleanest start since June

Valdez (7-7) limited Seattle to five hits, struck out five, walked two, and never let a runner past second base. It was his first scoreless outing since June 16. Over his last four starts he has allowed four runs in 19 innings, the kind of stretch that makes the post-Skubal rotation conversation feel less like damage control and more like a different version of the same fight.

Kyle Finnegan worked the eighth. Brenan Hanifee finished the ninth. Seattle was shut out for the second time in the series and the 11th time this season, tied for most in the majors.

Dingler's third straight homer

Dingler's 401-foot shot off Bryce Miller (4-6) in the first was his 26th of the season, most among AL catchers. Colt Keith's RBI double made it 3-0 before Miller had settled in. Miller needed 40 pitches to escape the first and eventually lasted five innings with four runs allowed.

Kevin McGonigle added a two-run homer off Cole Wilcox in the seventh, his 12th of the year. Keith chipped in another RBI single. McGonigle and Javier Báez each finished with two hits and two RBI. Detroit has scored at least eight runs in seven of its last eight games. That is not a fluke inning. That is a lineup timing its surge with the wild-card math.

Victor Robles even pitched the ninth for Seattle and allowed three runs on five hits. When the position player is on the mound, the night is already decided. The only question left is how ugly the final looks.

Wild-card math that suddenly matters

Detroit (56-59) won for the fifth time in six games and moved within a game of Texas in the race for the final AL wild-card spot. That is real ground gained for a club that traded its ace and then refused to fade.

Seattle (56-60) fell three games behind Houston in the AL West and 1 1/2 out of the wild card. Being held scoreless twice in three nights by the same opponent is the kind of series that haunts a September conversation before September arrives.

AthX Engine angle

Detroit posted 25 AthX Engine team fantasy points, the best team score on the entire slate. Valdez graded out at 23 pitching FP. Dingler and McGonigle both landed near the top of the hitting board. Seattle's zero on the scoreboard showed up as a dead night on the team board too.

What it means

Detroit's post-deadline story keeps writing itself with shutouts and crooked numbers. Seattle's does too, just in the wrong direction. One series does not crown a wild-card club. Two shutouts in three nights against the same opponent do force everyone else to take the Tigers seriously again.
