A shutout the day after the trade

August 2, 2026 – West Sacramento – Detroit traded Tarik Skubal on Saturday night. On Sunday afternoon, the Tigers looked like a club that still wanted to play October baseball.

Keider Montero threw six scoreless innings. Eduardo Valencia drove in four runs. Spencer Torkelson and Gleyber Torres cashed early traffic. The Detroit Tigers beat the Athletics 11-0 and finished the season series 6-0.

Montero needed only two hits and two walks through six. He improved to 8-6. The bullpen finished a game that had already been decided by the middle innings.

Home plate umpire Jeremie Rehak left after a foul tip off the mask. The crews finished with three umpires. Nobody in the Detroit dugout cared about the umpiring story. They cared about the 11-0 line.

What the night says about Detroit after Skubal

Trading a two-time Cy Young winner is supposed to look like a white flag. Detroit answered with a road shutout and a series that never gave Sacramento a win all year.

The Tigers are still 54-58. They are still looking up at Chicago in the Central. They are also 3-0 this weekend and 6-0 against this Athletics club. Front offices sell aces for prospects. Rosters still have to show up the next day.
