Sabres 5, Maple Leafs 4 (OT): Power Finishes What Quinn Started

October 15, 2026 - Toronto - Kirill Marchenko had already put three in the net in his 300th NHL game. Scotiabank Arena was 4-2 Toronto after two. Then Dennis Gilbert found a lane from the blue line, Mattias Samuelsson beat Sergei Bobrovsky from the high slot, and Owen Power still had to finish a give-and-go that almost got picked off.

The Buffalo Sabres beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 in overtime. Buffalo is 4-3-1. Toronto is 3-3-2. Shots were 34-30 Buffalo. Attendance was 18,886. Marchenko, Bobrovsky, Gilbert, Samuelsson, Noah Ostlund, Nick Blankenburg, Colton Sissons, Easton Cowan, Josh Norris, and Gavin McKenna's ice-time decision are not all seeded. Marchenko is. Bobrovsky, Gilbert, Samuelsson, Ostlund, and Blankenburg are not, so those names stay unlinked.

Jack Quinn had two goals and two assists. Ostlund and Zach Benson each had two assists. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 26 of 30. Auston Matthews scored. John Tavares had two assists. Bobrovsky stopped 29 of 34.

Matthews, a between-the-legs finish, then Quinn twice

Matthews opened it at 2:24. He leaped to glove a clearing attempt at the blue line, found Jack Roslovic, went to the net, and tapped the return at the crease, the NHL recap said. His point streak is six games (six goals, seven assists). 1-0.

Quinn tied it at 3:35. Benson got a puck Blankenburg over-skated behind the net and slid it to the crease. Quinn went between Bobrovsky's pads. Zach Metsa the other assist. Metsa is unlinked. 1-1.

Marchenko made it 2-1 at 13:10 on the power play. Tavares found him at the side of the net. He curled off the goal line and flipped it between his legs over Luukkonen's glove. Darren Raddysh the other assist. Raddysh is unlinked. The NHL recap called it his fifth career hat trick by the end of the night, first with Toronto, and only his second goal in a Leafs sweater after the Sept. 28 trade from Columbus, the AP recap said.

Quinn tied it 2-2 at 2:41 of the second. Ostlund went cross-ice. Quinn toe-dragged Jake McCabe and scored from the top of the right circle. Lindy Ruff told NHL.com it was the best game he has seen Quinn play: four points, a couple of posts, an unbelievable fight. He would give him the Gordie Howe hat trick on that one.

Marchenko scored again at 11:13 from Tavares, high glove from the top of the left circle after a poke along the wall. He finished the hat trick at 16:51, a one-timer from Sissons behind the net, Cowan the other helper. 4-2.

Two in the third, then Power at 3:14

Tavares left at 2:32 of the third after a collision with Norris, the NHL recap said. He stayed down about 90 seconds, then skated off. Jim Hiller had no update. McKenna, the No. 1 pick in the 2026 Draft, played 6:36 and did not play after 10:20 of the second. Hiller called it a coach's decision and said he probably should have gotten him out early in the third.

Gilbert cut it to 4-3 at 10:05, a snap through traffic from the blue line, Quinn and Benson. Samuelsson tied it at 12:16 from Tage Thompson, over the blocker from the high slot. Samuelsson told NHL.com there is no quit, and they would like to play with a lead sometimes too.

Power scored at 3:14 of overtime. Quinn saucered one. Power slipped past Marchenko at the top of the left circle. Power told NHL.com the pass almost got picked, he was lucky to get it by, and then he was in alone. They have come from behind. You get confident. Marchenko told NHL.com he will remember the night, but a win is more important, and it was his mistake in overtime.

Norris left at 2:41 of overtime after falling over Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Ruff said he is in concussion protocol. Rasmus Dahlin missed a second straight game. Jiri Kulich sat, not feeling well, tests negative, day to day.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for a Quinn night Ruff had not seen, and for a Marchenko hat trick that still lost. They are not the same number.

Track Quinn, Power, Matthews, and both clubs on the marketplace. Buffalo visits Montreal on Saturday. The Islanders visit Toronto that night.
