First-inning homer, then a four-game broom
August 20, 2026 - Kansas City - Bobby Witt Jr. went deep in the first, 402 feet to left-center, and the afternoon already had its shape.
The Kansas City Royals beat the Athletics 6-2, finished their first four-game sweep of the season, and stretched the winning streak to five. Twelve hits. Early traffic. Enough pitching to keep Oakland's fifth-inning push from turning into a series salvage job.
Witt kept scoring. The lineup kept cashing.
Witt's 16th homer made it 1-0. In the third, Isaac Collins singled home Salvador Perez and Witt with Vinnie Pasquantino at third. 3-0.
The fourth added two more. Nick Loftin tripled home Michael Massey. Perez singled Witt home again. 5-0. Massey doubled home Collins in the fifth for the sixth run.
Witt scored three times. Perez collected three singles. Massey added the double that padded the lead after Oakland finally scored. That is a clean Kauffman afternoon from a club that spent earlier stretches of the summer looking for exactly this kind of series.
Oakland's only noise came in the fifth
The Athletics scored twice in the fifth. Max Muncy and Lawrence Butler reached in the rally. Lucas Serven singled home a run. Donovan Walton grounded in another. 5-2, then 6-2 after Massey's double.
Cody Thomas (1-1) earned the win. Grant Jump (5-8) took the loss after giving up the early damage. Kansas City turned two double plays and did not need a late bullpen firefight. The sweep was already written by the middle innings.
