The Cincinnati Reds scored seven in the ninth. Héctor Rodríguez homered. Eugenio Suárez hit a grand slam. Tyler Stephenson singled home the go-ahead run. Cincinnati won 10-9.
Rafael Devers had already gone deep. It did not matter. The ninth inning rewrote the night.
Webb's lead, then Cincinnati's last at-bat
Jose Trevino singled home Dane Myers in the second. Jonah Cox answered with a two-run homer. Rodríguez homered in the third. Devers hit a two-run shot in the fifth, his 29th. Shay Whitcomb homered in the sixth. 6-2 Giants.
Ke'Bryan Hayes scored on Sal Stewart's sacrifice fly in the seventh. 6-3. Gilbert's three-run double in the eighth made it 9-3. Nick Lodolo had already been gone after four innings and four runs. The Reds were playing from a hole Webb built and the eighth made deeper.
The ninth: Rodríguez's second homer. Traffic. Suárez's slam, his 19th, scoring Elly De La Cruz, Stewart, and JJ Bleday. 9-8. Trevino's sacrifice fly tied it. Stephenson singled home Matt McLain. 10-9. Tony Santillan got the win. Emilio Pagán closed it.
Rodríguez went 3-for-6 with two homers. De La Cruz had three hits. Myers had three hits. Devers went 2-for-4 with two RBI and still left with an L. A 9-3 eighth-inning lead is supposed to travel. This one did not leave the ninth.
