August 10, 2026 - West Sacramento - For seven innings the Athletics had this game. A stolen home plate. A solo shot from a guy just off the injured list. A three-run seventh that made Sutter Health Park feel like a club that could hold a lead.
Then the eighth started, and the Tampa Bay Rays sent 12 hitters to the plate.
Eight runs. One inning. A 6-2 deficit turned into a 10-6 win and a seventh straight victory. Junior Caminero supplied the swing that made the rally real. Everybody else behind him refused to make the last out.
Díaz on the second pitch, then a long wait
Yandy Díaz homered on the second pitch of the night. 1-0, and you could have been forgiven for thinking Tampa Bay was about to do what first-place clubs do to last-place clubs on a Monday in August.
The Athletics answered in the same inning. Tyler Soderstrom doubled in the tying run, then stole home. 2-1, West Sacramento, and the stolen plate was the kind of play that sticks to a broadcast for three hours. Zack Gelof, back from a right-knee laceration he picked up against Detroit on July 9, hit a solo homer in the fifth. 3-1. Jacob Lopez was still dealing: seven innings, two runs, five hits, five strikeouts, one walk. Tampa Bay had Freddy Peralta through six (three earned, five strikeouts) and almost nothing to show for the early Díaz swing.
The seventh was supposed to bury it. Jeff McNeil lifted a sacrifice fly. Jacob Wilson doubled. Three runs, 6-2, and Chris Roycroft took the ball for Tampa Bay with the night leaking away. Roycroft's line would look ugly later (three hits, three earned). It would also come with a win, because the next half-inning erased the whole card.
Twelve hitters, one inning, no air left
Díaz singled. Jonathan Aranda singled. Caminero, already sitting on 33 homers, hit his 34th, a three-run shot that made it 6-5 and turned a comfortable Athletics night into a problem. Chandler Simpson singled in the tying run. Taylor Walls singled in two more. 8-6, and the inning was not finished. Díaz came up again and hit a sacrifice fly. Aranda came up again and singled in another run. 10-6.
Jose Suarez recorded one out and was charged with four runs. Seth Johnson recorded none and was charged with four more. That is how a starter's quality start becomes a box-score footnote. Lopez did his job for seven innings. The Athletics' bullpen turned a four-run lead into a four-run loss before the eighth inning's 12th batter had sat down.
Jonny DeLuca had three hits and scored twice. Simpson added two steals. Tampa Bay finished with 12 hits and the kind of inning that makes a seven-game winning streak look less like a hot week and more like a club that does not stay buried.
Kevin Kelly and Tyler Wells handled the eighth and ninth. Wells struck out the side around a hit and a walk. The Athletics never got the eighth-inning noise back. Twelve Tampa Bay hits, one error, and a 10-6 final that will show up in the standings as just another win in a 72-46 season. It did not feel like just another win for the first two hours. It felt like a loss until Caminero's 34th homer made the eighth inning possible.
First place does not do moral victories
Tampa Bay is 72-46. The Athletics are 47-72. A four-run lead in the seventh against a first-place lineup is not a moral victory when you hand it back in 20 minutes. Gelof's first night off the IL was a real game: a homer and an RBI double. Soderstrom stealing home was a real game. None of it survived Caminero's third swing of the eighth.
I am less interested in crowning the Rays after a rally against a last-place bullpen. I am interested in whether this lineup's habit of ending games in one inning is the identity or a trick it plays on clubs that cannot throw a second good pitcher. Seven in a row says the identity is winning. Monday said it does not always look pretty for the first two hours.
AthX Engine angle
Tampa Bay finished with 17 AthX Engine team fantasy points, second on the Monday board behind only Arizona's shutout. Díaz led the Rays' bats at 11 hitting fantasy points. Caminero's three-run shot was worth 8. Peralta's six innings checked in at 10 pitching fantasy points, a quality start that the offense eventually made relevant. The Athletics landed at 1 team fantasy point, which is what a blown four-run lead looks like when the other club cashes eight in a single inning.
