Rangers 6, Giants 0: Bradford's Return and a Four-Run Third

August 5, 2026 - Arlington - Six hundred seventy-nine days is a long time to wait for the next pitch. Cody Bradford didn't need a complete game. He needed to prove the arm still worked under major-league lights.

It did.

Bradford threw 4 1/3 effective innings in his first appearance since September 2024, and the Texas Rangers blanked the San Francisco Giants 6-0 behind a four-run third and Brandon Nimmo's power.

A comeback start, not a fairy tale

Bradford worked around traffic in all but the third inning of his first outing after elbow surgery in June 2025. The left-hander allowed five hits and two walks on 70 pitches. It wasn't pretty. It was useful. For a Rangers club that spent late July watching its AL West lead evaporate, useful is the point.

Tyler Alexander (2-2) got the final two outs of the fifth with two runners on, then struck out three in 1 2/3 innings. The rest of the bullpen finished Texas' 10th shutout of the season. San Francisco was blanked for the 11th time and left 11 men on base, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Foscue's triple opens the door

The offense did its damage in a hurry. Five of the first six batters who faced Giants left-hander Carson Whisenhunt (2-3) a second time reached base. Justin Foscue ripped his first career triple. Wyatt Langford and Elias Díaz doubled. The third inning became a four-run hole San Francisco never climbed out of.

Nimmo drove in two, including a homer sliced down the left-field line in the fifth off Carson Seymour. For a Rangers lineup that has lived in streaks all year, a clean multi-run inning plus a midgame homer was enough on a night the pitching staff threw zeroes.

Whisenhunt has allowed 14 earned runs in 11 2/3 innings across his last three starts. That is the kind of stretch that turns road series into free falls. The Giants fell 19 games under .500 for the first time this season and have lost seven consecutive road series.

Standing still in the West

Texas (57-58) won the last two games of the series after dropping Monday's opener, which had been a season-worst sixth straight loss. The Rangers led the AL West by two games on July 28. After Wednesday, they sat 1 1/2 behind Houston. The math is still playable. The margin for another skid is not.

Bradford's return is a roster story as much as a box-score story. He went 10-6 with a 4.28 ERA from 2023-24 and made five postseason relief appearances in the 2023 World Series run. Depth arms that miss a year and come back throwing strikes change how a staff maps the final two months.

AthX Engine angle

Texas finished with 15 AthX Engine team fantasy points, third on the slate behind only Washington and Arizona. Nimmo posted 10 hitting FP. Shutouts always look cleaner on the team board than on the individual pitching board when the innings are shared, and this one was a committee win after Bradford's limited pitch count.

What it means

Bradford's night was step one, not a coronation. Texas still has to climb a half-game and then some in a West race that punishes every lost series. San Francisco keeps finding ways to strand runners and lose on the road. One of those problems is fixable with better sequencing. The other has been a season-long theme.
