Phillies 9, Braves 4: Bohm's Double and a Seven-Run Eighth

A 2-2 game, then seven in the eighth

September 13, 2026 - Atlanta - Alec Bohm doubled Trea Turner and Bryce Harper home in the eighth. The inning did not stop. The Philadelphia Phillies scored seven times, beat the Atlanta Braves 9-4, and avoided a sweep in a series they still lost on the scoreboard that matters. The Associated Press recap said Philadelphia left Atlanta five games out of first after trailing by four when the weekend started.

Partly cloudy, 88 degrees. First pitch 1:37 p.m. Attendance 39,830. The game lasted 2 hours, 54 minutes. Sixteen Phillies hits. A two-run homer from J.T. Realmuto in the second. Then 13 more outs of a 2-2 game before the eighth rewrote it.

The Phillies are 83-67. The Braves are 88-62. Atlanta won Friday 6-5 in 11 innings and Saturday 12-2, the AP recap said. Sunday was the one Philadelphia had to have if the NL East was going to stay a race instead of a gap.

Painter through a bases-loaded fourth

Andrew Painter went five: six hits, one run, four walks, three strikeouts, 87 pitches. He did not get a decision. He did get out of the fourth with the bases loaded, and that is the inning the AP recap put in the recap for a reason.

Drake Baldwin hit a sacrifice fly in the first, Michael Harris II scoring. 1-0. Realmuto answered in the second with his 11th, a two-run drive to left-center, Brandon Marsh scoring. 2-1. Grant Holmes lasted four innings, five hits, two runs, Realmuto's homer, two walks, no strikeouts, 71 pitches. He left a one-run game. Atlanta still had the bats.

Painter walked Austin Riley and Ha-Seong Kim in the fourth and gave up a single to Harris. Bases loaded. Ronald Acuña Jr. popped up. Matt Olson grounded to first. The inning ended 2-1. Painter had thrown a lot of pitches to keep a lead that would not last until the eighth.

Harris led off the seventh with a single off José Alvarado (4-3). A wild pitch moved him to second. Olson singled to left. 2-2. Alvarado took the blown save and, later, the win. That is what a seven-run eighth does to a pitching line.

Turner, Harper, Bohm, then everybody else

Dylan Lee (6-1) entered for the eighth. Turner reached. Harper doubled, his second of the game. Bohm doubled to center, Turner and Harper scoring. 4-2. Bryson Stott singled Bohm home. 5-2. Realmuto singled Stott home. 6-2. Kyle Schwarber singled to right off Victor Mederos, Bryan De La Cruz and Realmuto scoring, Justin Crawford going to third. 8-2. Turner singled Crawford home. 9-2. Seven runs. Sixteen hits by the time the inning closed. Lee: two-thirds of an inning, four hits, four runs. The AP recap called Bohm's double the tie-breaker and then listed the pile-on.

Realmuto finished 3-for-5 with a homer, a double, three RBI, and two runs. Bohm went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Stott went 3-for-5. Harper had two doubles. Schwarber drove in two. Turner had two hits and an RBI. Philadelphia left eight on and still scored nine. Team RISP in the eighth was the whole game.

Olson hit a two-run homer in the ninth, his 39th, Acuña scoring, off Tanner Banks, who had been activated off the 60-day injured list before the game, the AP recap said. 9-4. Banks had thrown two innings and already given up those two runs. Alex McFarlane had thrown a scoreless sixth. The bullpen that won the game was the one that survived the seventh, then watched the eighth do the rest.

A series loss, a 9-4, and Washington on Tuesday

Harris went 3-for-5. Mauricio Dubón went 3-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base. Olson had three hits and three RBI. Acuña had two hits. Atlanta had 12 hits, left 11 on, and still lost because the eighth inning in a 2-2 game belonged to Philadelphia.

Ray Kerr threw three scoreless after Holmes, one hit, four strikeouts. Bailey Falter got four outs. None of that shows up in a 9-4. The Braves had the starter and the eighth-inning lead in the series, and they still sent the Phillies home with one win and a five-game hole.

Tuesday is Cristopher Sánchez (17-5, 2.79) at Washington after Monday's off day, the AP recap said. Atlanta starts Reynaldo López (4-4, 4.13) at the Cubs on Monday. A seven-run eighth avoided a sweep. It did not avoid the math. The Phillies are five back. Sunday at least made that sentence louder than Saturday's 12-2.
