Padres 7, Athletics 3: Laureano Breaks Tie as Machado and Castellanos Homer at Petco

The lead

May 22, 2026 - San Diego - Ramón Laureano hit a tiebreaking home run with one out in the seventh inning, Manny Machado and Nick Castellanos also connected, and the San Diego Padres beat the Athletics 7-3 on Friday night, per the Associated Press recap on CBS Sports.

San Diego bounced back from consecutive losses to the Dodgers and beat the AL West-leading A's for the ninth time in their last 10 meetings, snapping Oakland's three-game winning streak.

How the game turned

Nick Kurtz doubled home a run in the first to extend his on-base streak to 45 games—the longest in the majors this season—and Brent Rooker's groundout made it 2-0 Athletics. Fernando Tatis Jr. walked and Machado tied it with a two-run homer to left with two outs in the first.

Henry Bolte's RBI single put Oakland back ahead 3-2 in the fourth. Castellanos answered in the fifth with a towering drive just fair off the Western Metal Supply Co. bricks to make it 3-3. Laureano's sixth homer of the year chased Jeffrey Springs (3-5) and gave San Diego its first lead.

The Padres added three in the eighth—Gavin Sheets' two-run double and Xander Bogaerts' sacrifice fly—and Adrian Morejon (4-1) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth before the bullpen closed it out.

Pitching and matchup notes

Springs allowed seven runs on seven hits over 7⅔ innings before Laureano ended his night. Morejon struck out pinch-hitter Colby Thomas with the bases loaded in the sixth to keep the game tied.

AthX Engine graded San Diego at 14 team FP with homers from three different bats rather than one massive individual line.

Bats that changed the board

Machado's line-shot homer, Castellanos' corner-fair blast, and Laureano's go-ahead shot in the seventh gave the Padres three different answers to Oakland's early lead. Sheets' eighth-inning double provided the cushion Mason Miller did not need—rest for the closer was part of the win, Laureano noted postgame.

AthX Engine fantasy angle

Three homers plus a late rally grades as 14 team FP in AthX Engine—spread power without a 15 FP hitter. That daily total does not move share prices on its own; see dynamic pricing.

What comes next

The Padres improved to 30-20 at home. Oakland fell to 26-25 on the road. J.T. Ginn and Lucas Giolito were listed for Saturday's rematch, per AP.
