Orioles 8, Royals 6: Baltimore’s Sixth-Inning Thunder

April 22, 2026 - Kansas City - This game had more homers than innings with real tension. The Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 8-6 after Pete Alonso opened the scoring with a two-run shot in the first and Coby Mayo buried the decisive blow with a three-run homer in the sixth.

Kansas City kept answering. Vinnie Pasquantino homered in the first. Kyle Jensen and Kyle Isbel went deep in the sixth to keep the Royals within shouting distance, per the ESPN play log. Baltimore still won the middle of the game because its sixth inning was bigger: Leody Taveras and Alex Jackson drove in runs before Mayo’s blast made it 8-3.

Bassitt bent, then the bullpen finished

Chris Bassitt allowed five earned runs in 5.1 innings but still earned the win on a night defined by offense. Tyler Wells and Angel Nunez covered the late frames; Nunez picked up a one-inning save with two strikeouts.

Wacha could not survive the sixth

Michael Wacha was charged with six earned runs across 5.1 innings. Phil Maton gave up Mayo’s homer in relief. When two teams combine for five home runs, the story is rarely subtle—and this night was no exception.

AthX Engine fantasy angle

AthX Engine scoring loves multi-homer team wins. Mayo and Alonso profile as Baltimore’s top hitter lines, while Pasquantino and Isbel still post usable totals for Kansas City despite the loss. Bassitt’s line is more about the win than the ERA glitter.

AthX Engine fantasy output is separate from dynamic pricing.

What it meant

For Baltimore, this was a reminder that Mayo’s power can change the scoreboard in one swing. For Kansas City, it was a night of fight without enough zeros from the staff to match the fireworks.
