Who's Hot and Who's Not: MLB Hitters

Alex Bregman walked twice on August 12 before he put a ball in play. Then he hit three home runs and drove in seven in Washington. That night was the loudest swing of a 10-day stretch that already had him first among hitters.

AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) scored regular-season lines from August 3 through August 12. Bregman finished with 53 hitting fantasy points. Wilyer Abreu was next at 48. Three outfielders tied at 45: Pete Crow-Armstrong, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Jac Caglianone.

This is a 10-day board, not a season ranking. Ten days can crown a three-homer night. They can also bury a $175 million first baseman who is still in the lineup. Sibling boards: pitchers and teams.

The heat: Bregman, then a pile-up at 45

Bregman is a Cub now. The first half of his Chicago deal was quiet enough that people asked if the Cubs had bought the September version of him. The last 10 days answered with counting stats, not vibes: 14 hits, 5 homers, 14 RBI, 11 runs in 9 games. His 24-point night in the Cubs' 12-6 win was the single biggest hitting day in the window. The Associated Press called it his first career three-homer game and a career-high seven RBI.

Abreu did not need a historic box score. Eight games, 9 hits, 4 homers, 10 RBI, 9 runs, 2 steals, 7 walks against 4 strikeouts. That is a clean AthX Engine profile: power, on-base, and enough speed to keep the total moving when the ball stays in the yard. His best day was August 4 (13 hitting FP, two homers).

The 45-point tie is the interesting part of the board.

Crow-Armstrong stacked 12 hits, 3 homers, 13 runs, and 4 steals for the same Cubs club that went 8-1 in the window. His peak was August 5 (15 FP, two homers). Tatis got there with fewer hits (9) and more damage per contact: 4 homers, 11 runs, only 4 strikeouts in 9 games. Caglianone, on a Royals team that went 3-6, still had the loudest single night besides Bregman: 4-for-4 with two doubles and two homers in a 6-3 win over Chicago on August 8, the first two-double, two-homer game in Royals history per MLB.com.

That is the point of a hitter board that is not a team board. Kansas City can lose the week. Caglianone can still finish in a three-way tie for third.

The names behind them

Alec Burleson and Bryson Stott both landed at 40 FP with opposite shapes. Burleson mashed (10 hits, 4 HR, 13 RBI). Stott did not homer in 10 games. He walked 10 times, stole 4 bases, and piled doubles. AthX Engine scoring likes both versions.

Jackson Merrill (39 FP) kept San Diego's other outfield seat next to Tatis. Josh Bell and Jake McCarthy tied at 38. Junior Caminero matched Chandler Simpson at 36 with a completely different Rays toolkit: 5 homers and 11 RBI for Caminero, 15 hits and 6 steals and zero homers for Simpson.

Hitters needed more hitting FP than pitching FP in the window. Games are days with a hitting line.

The freeze: playing, not producing

The cold board is the one people skip, and it is the one that actually tells you something. Filter: at least eight games. Rank by lowest AthX Engine hitting FP. These bats were in the lineup. They just did not score.

Rafael Devers is the name that stops the scroll. Nine games, 5 hits, 1 homer, 2 RBI, 2 runs, 9 strikeouts, 4 hitting FP. The Giants went 3-6 in the same window and scored 23 runs. Devers did not create an independent island of production while the club sank.

Freddie Freeman was next among the stars: 8 hits, 0 homers, 3 RBI, 1 run in 9 games, 5 FP. Max Muncy had 4 hits, 1 homer, and 7 RBI in 8 games, and still only 6 FP. The RBI total looks fine until you see one run scored and 11 strikeouts. The Dodgers as a club finished 21st in team FP over the same dates. The middle of that order did not bail them out.

The rest of the bottom is everyday-ish at-bats that went nowhere: Dylan Beavers, Josh Lowe, and Jacob Gonzalez each finished at 1 FP across eight or nine games. Nasim Nuñez and Nicky Lopez sat at 2. JJ Bleday and Luis Lara at 3. None of those are Bregman-level headlines. They are what a 10-day floor looks like when you actually require playing time.

Cold rank 1 is the lowest FP among qualified hitters. Ten days is a small sample. It is still a sample of games they played.

What 10 days actually tell you

Bregman's three-homer night would have made a daily Top 10 by itself. It also sat on top of eight other games, which is why he opened a gap instead of tying the 45-point pile. Caglianone's 4-for-4 is the opposite lesson: one historic box score can drag a hitter onto a hot list while his team stays cold.

Devers and Freeman are the caution. Name value does not print fantasy points. If you only look at reputation, you miss a 4-point week in a 53-point field.

Fantasy points measure what a player did. Price is what the market will pay. They move together, but they are not the same number. See dynamic pricing explained.
