The lead
May 31, 2026 - Flushing - Juan Soto hit a grand slam, Carson Benge launched his first career leadoff homer, and the New York Mets routed the Miami Marlins 10-1 to complete a three-game sweep, per the Associated Press recap on CBS Sports.
David Peterson pitched four scoreless innings in relief for his first regular-season save. New York scored 25 runs in the series and has won four straight.
How the game turned
Benge's leadoff shot set the tone. Marcus Semien homered earlier in the series finale buildup, and the Mets led 6-1 when rookie Josh White made his major league debut in the sixth.
White struck out the first two batters, then walked Semien, hit Francisco Alvarez, and walked Benge to load the bases. Bo Bichette walked for 7-1 before Soto crushed a cement-mixer slider for the Mets' first grand slam of 2026 and 10-1.
Nolan McLean (3-4) won with five innings and one run allowed. Peterson, recently moved to the bullpen, allowed one hit and one walk with three strikeouts over four frames.
Pitching and matchup notes
Peterson's save mirrored his 2024 postseason clincher against Milwaukee—this time in a regular-season blowout. The Mets head west for Seattle and San Diego after outscoring Miami 25-10 in the series.
AthX Engine graded New York at 22 team FP with Peterson at 18 pitching FP and Soto at 9 hitting FP.
Bats that changed the board
Soto has nine homers in his last 15 games. Benge's leadoff homer was his first. Miami managed only three hits. The sweep followed a 10-7 walk-off win Friday and a series loss in Miami the prior weekend.
AthX Engine fantasy angle
22 team FP with a 18 pitching FP save line shows AthX Engine valuing bullpen length in a rout—Peterson's four innings mattered as much as Soto's slam. Daily scoring remains separate from dynamic pricing.
What comes next
The Mets open a West Coast trip in Seattle on Monday, per AP.
