Marlins 3, Braves 0: Pérez's One-Hitter on a Heavy Anniversary

Nine innings, one hit, a date Miami does not treat as ordinary

September 25, 2026 - Miami - Eury Pérez had started 67 big-league games and had never pitched into the eighth. On Friday he threw all nine. One hit. One walk. Eight strikeouts. 105 pitches, 73 strikes. The Miami Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves 3-0 at loanDepot park. Sean Murphy's single was Atlanta's only hit. The roof was closed. The night was Pérez's.

Roof closed. 72 degrees. No wind. First pitch 7:10 p.m. Attendance 26,060. The game lasted 2 hours, 1 minute. Miami had 10 hits, three runs, and one error. Atlanta had one hit, no runs, and no errors. Pérez (the win, 8-11) faced 29 hitters. He walked Matt Olson. He did not walk anyone else.

The MLB recap put the date on the page. Friday was the 10-year anniversary of José Fernández's death. Pérez, when he debuted on May 12, 2023, had passed Fernández as the youngest Marlin to pitch in the majors. He became the seventh Marlin to throw a one-hit shutout, the first since Aníbal Sánchez on September 10, 2011, at Pittsburgh. He is the first to allow one hit or fewer in a complete game since Edinson Volquez's no-hitter on June 3, 2017.

"First, I want to give thanks to God, and everyone on the staff," Pérez said in Spanish, per MLB.com. "They trusted in me in that moment, and they let me go out there in the ninth. It was very fun to go out there, to compete and enjoy the game. The pitching coach told me before the game to enjoy it, that today is the last game, to finish off the season like it was against the Cubs [on Tuesday]. He told me that it was very fun to watch me there, that I was smiling the whole time."

Grant Holmes (the loss, 10-6) threw four innings: three hits, one earned, three walks, one strikeout, one homer, 54 pitches. The homer came from Joe Mack in the seventh, a fly to the upper deck in right-center, his 14th. 1-0. Holmes was already out of the game by then. Ray Kerr had thrown three scoreless after him. Didier Fuentes inherited the eighth and did not keep it at 1-0.

Jakob Marsee tripled. Heriberto Hernández singled him home. 2-0. Griffin Conine homered to left-center, his 18th. 3-0. Five hits in the inning off Fuentes. Pérez was at 90 pitches after eight, per the MLB recap, and the staff still sent him back out. He finished it. No save. No reliever. The last start of his season was a complete game.

Murphy's hit was it for Atlanta. Olson walked. That was the traffic. Michael Harris II did not get a hit. The Braves are 93-67 and already in. Friday was a road game against a Marlins club that is 79-81 and playing out the string, except Pérez was not playing out the string. He was smiling, the pitching coach told him, and he threw 105 pitches on a night Miami does not treat as ordinary.

Javier Sanoja went 2-for-4. Marsee went 2-for-4 with the triple and the run. Conine went 2-for-3 with a walk, a homer, a run, and an RBI. Mack went 1-for-2 with a walk, a homer, a run, and an RBI. Otto Lopez and Agustín Ramírez each had a hit. Ten hits, three runs, all of them after the sixth. Pérez did not need the three runs to own the box score. He needed Mack's homer so the ninth would still be a shutout bid instead of a 0-0 extra-inning problem.

Pérez's previous 67 starts stopped before the eighth. Tuesday against the Cubs, the recap said, was the tone the pitching coach wanted him to copy: enjoy it, last start, compete. He copied it for 27 more outs than that relief outing on September 22, when he had struck out the side in the eighth at Wrigley. This time there was no eighth-inning cameo. There was a complete game.

The Braves will go to October with Holmes taking a loss in four innings. Miami will go home for the winter with Pérez's one-hitter on the last start.
