Maple Leafs 3, Sharks 1: McKenna Beats Askarov After Matthews Ties It

October 19, 2026 - Toronto - Gavin McKenna took it at the bottom of the right dot, went into the slot, and beat Yaroslav Askarov glove side. Scotiabank Arena had 2-1 at 4:56 of the third. It was his first NHL power-play goal. It was also the first time the No. 1 and No. 2 picks of the 2026 Draft shared a sheet, and Ivar Stenberg left with one shot, a minus-1, and 14:27.

The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the San Jose Sharks 3-1. Toronto is 4-4-2 and snapped a three-game slide (0-2-1). San Jose is 4-4-1, 1-3-1 in its last five, 1-1-1 on a six-game trip. Shots were 32-31 Toronto. Attendance was 19,011, per ESPN.

Sergei Bobrovsky, Nick Paul, Colton Sissons, Mason Marchment, Tyler Toffoli, Ivar Stenberg, Alexander Wennberg, Artur Akhtyamov, Macklin Celebrini, and Darren Raddysh are not seeded on AthX player pages, so those names stay unlinked. Yaroslav Askarov is seeded.

Auston Matthews had a goal and two assists. McKenna scored. Paul hit the empty net. Bobrovsky stopped 30 of 31 for his first home win with Toronto. Marchment scored. Askarov stopped 29 of 31 in 58:59. The Associated Press recap listed 28 saves. The NHL box is 29 saves, two goals against, 31 shots. That is the line we scored. Paul's empty-netter did not test him.

Marchment at 13:54, then Matthews with 12 seconds left in the second

Marchment opened it at 13:54 of the first. Toffoli floated one from the left point. Marchment gloved it at the crease and lifted a backhand over Bobrovsky's left pad. The AP recap said Matthews turned it over in the defensive zone and left Marchment alone. Marchment told NHL.com he stayed under Toffoli and the play came through everyone.

Askarov held it there. Jim Hiller told NHL.com Toronto had even-strength chances through 40 minutes and Askarov made saves. Ryan Warsofsky said they were getting looks and not scoring, with consistency issues with the puck and without it.

Matthews tied it at 19:48 of the second on the power play. Kirill Marchenko from behind the net. Matthews one-timed it from the left circle over Askarov's blocker. Darren Raddysh the other assist. The NHL notes called it Matthews' 64th career three-point game, one behind Mats Sundin (65) for third in franchise history.

McKenna's first power-play goal, then the empty net

McKenna, on NHL.com: the puck was bouncing, battle wins, a little time and space, shot low glove, pretty fired up. He said before the game he was not treating it as McKenna versus Stenberg. Leafs versus Sharks. He finished with three goals and three assists through 10 games, the second Maple Leafs player 18 or younger in the modern era with six or more points through 10, after Russ Courtnall in 1983-84, the NHL notes said. He is the fifth Leafs player 18 or younger with a game-winning goal.

William Nylander had the other assist on McKenna. Paul raced down the right wing and scored from the top of the circle at 19:20 after San Jose pulled Askarov. Matthews and Sissons the helpers. 3-1.

Wennberg left briefly in the third and did not take a shift after 3:56 remaining. Warsofsky said an upper-body injury. Akhtyamov dressed as Toronto's backup after a recall from the AHL, the NHL recap said. Celebrini had five shots and no points in 21:59.

San Jose visits Montreal on Tuesday. Toronto visits Columbus the same night.

AthX Engine on Matthews' 11.80

AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) scored Matthews at 11.80 (the goal, two assists, three shots, a block, the power-play bonus). Darren Raddysh is 6.50. Marchment is 6.40. McKenna is 5.10. Paul is 4.60. Nylander is 4.30. Bobrovsky's win, 30 saves, and one goal against land at 13.80, the top goalie line on Monday's four-game slate. Askarov is 9.20.

Toronto's team line is 17.60. San Jose's 1-3 floors at 0.00.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what traders will pay for Matthews driving a 3-1 that ended a slide, and for a No. 1 pick who beat the No. 2 pick with a power-play wrist, not a headline rivalry. They are not the same number.
