Guardians 9, Rockies 1: Bottom of the Order Owns Coors

Seventh, eighth, and ninth wrote the box score

August 21, 2026 - Denver - The Cleveland Guardians did not need the top of the order to own Coors Field. They needed the bottom three.

Petey Halpin tied it with a solo homer in the third. Travis Bazzana knocked in two in the fourth, then kept finding hits until he had four, matching a career high. Patrick Bailey ended the argument with a three-run shot in the seventh. Final: Guardians 9, Colorado Rockies 1.

Bazzana, Bailey, and Halpin, batting seventh through ninth, drove in seven of the nine runs. Cleveland moved past Toronto in the AL wild-card picture and stayed a game behind Texas for the final berth.

Colorado scored first. Cleveland answered for six innings.

Willi Castro singled McCarthy home in the first. That was Colorado's night on the scoreboard.

Halpin's 422-foot homer to right-center tied it in the third. In the fourth, Bazzana singled home Brandon Lowe and Angel Genao for a 3-1 lead. Steven Kwan walked in the fifth, Chase DeLauter reached when Cole Carrigg lost a fly in the lights, and Jo Adell singled Kwan home. Kwan's groundout in the sixth made it 5-1. Bailey's three-run homer in the seventh made it 8-1. Bazzana's ninth-inning single plated another.

Fourteen hits. Two Rockies errors. Tanner Gordon (0-4) was charged with five runs. Colorado shortstop Ezequiel Tovar left in the fourth with illness. Third baseman Kyle Karros returned from the concussion list and reached twice, but the Rockies never got the lead back.

That is the Coors version of a road win Cleveland needed. Not a clean pitching duel. A night where the bottom of the order kept answering, the middle of the order took free bases when the defense cracked, and the bullpen refused to let a bases-loaded inning become a four-run inning.

Cantillo bent. Herrin slammed the door in the fifth.

Joey Cantillo worked into the fifth with a lead, then loaded the bases with two outs. Tim Herrin came on and got Castro to ground out to second. That sequence kept it a three-run game instead of a Coors free-for-all. Herrin (2-4) threw 1 1/3 for the win in relief. DeLauter was back in the lineup after three games out with a hamstring issue.

Colorado catcher Brett Sullivan even pitched the ninth, his seventh relief appearance of the year. By then Cleveland was playing with house money.
