Guardians 8, Astros 5: Cleveland's Eighth-Inning Hurricane

April 21, 2026 - Cleveland - The Cleveland Guardians spent most of Tuesday night trailing a dangerous Houston Astros lineup. Then the eighth inning arrived, Chase DeLauter ripped a bases-clearing triple, and Kyle Manzardo followed with a two-run single that turned a 4-2 deficit into an 8-4 lead. Cleveland won 8-5.

Yordan Alvarez had given Houston a 3-2 edge in the fifth with a two-out, three-run single, per ESPN's inning log. Carlos Correa added an RBI infield single in the seventh. For six innings, it looked like Houston might ride that middle-inning burst home.

Houston's lead vaporized in one half-inning

Brayan Rocchio started the eighth with an RBI single. DeLauter's triple to left cleared the bases and flipped the stadium noise. Manzardo capped the frame with two more runs. Alvarez doubled home Jacob Matthews in the ninth for Houston's final run, but the Astros never brought the tying run to the plate.

Starters and openers traded early blows

George Valera singled home José Ramírez in the first. Angel Martínez homered in the second for Cleveland. Parker Pallette picked up the win in relief; the story was Cleveland's late offense, not a classic starting duel.

AthX Engine fantasy angle

Late-inning crooked numbers show up everywhere on AthX Engine: hitter counting stats jump, team fantasy scores spike, and the winning side collects full win credit. DeLauter and Manzardo profile as Cleveland's top hitter lines, while Alvarez still clears a strong total despite the loss.

What it meant

For Cleveland, this was resilience with a timetable: hang around, force leverage, then punish one shaky half-inning. For Houston, it was the opposite lesson: a three-run lead in the late innings is not a finish line when the bullpen loses the strike zone and the defense cannot kill the rally.
