Guardians 11, Royals 1: Ramírez Drives in Four, Messick Lasts Six

Kansas City scored first. Cleveland scored the next 11.

August 30, 2026 – Cleveland – Jac Caglianone doubled. Salvador Perez singled him home. Progressive Field had a 1-0 game in the first inning, and Seth Lugo had the lead he needed.

He did not keep it through the bottom half. The Cleveland Guardians scored three, then three more in the third, then three in the fourth. The Kansas City Royals never scored again. Final: 11-1.

José Ramírez drove in four. Parker Messick threw six innings and let Kansas City's first-inning run sit there like a souvenir. Chase DeLauter went 4-for-4. The afternoon never turned back into a contest.

Three innings, nine runs, Lugo gone

Steven Kwan and DeLauter reached in the first. Ramírez hit a sacrifice fly to center. 1-1. Jo Adell reached, and Nathaniel Lowe homered to left-center, his 15th, scoring Adell. 3-1. First inning, lead gone, and Lugo was already throwing with traffic.

The third was louder. Kwan and DeLauter scored on Adell's double to left, Ramírez standing on third. Lowe's sacrifice fly scored Ramírez. 6-1. The fourth was the same names in a different order. DeLauter doubled to right and scored Kwan. Ramírez homered to right-center, his 11th, scoring DeLauter. 9-1. Lugo left after 3 2/3 innings, nine hits, nine earned runs, two walks, two strikeouts. The line was the story. Connor Thomas, Jose Cuas, and Luke Maile finished the rest. None of them could un-score the first four innings.

Messick (11-8) worked six innings, five hits, one run, two walks, five strikeouts, 105 pitches. Perez's first-inning single was the damage. Tim Herrin allowed two hits in a scoreless seventh. Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith each threw a clean inning. Kansas City put seven hits on the board and turned one of them into a run.

Ramírez, DeLauter, and a lineup that kept adding

Ramírez finished 2-for-3 with a walk, a homer, two runs, and four RBI. The Associated Press noted his 1,000th career single in the same game as the homer. That is a nice round number. The four RBI are why Cleveland won by 10.

DeLauter went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs, and an RBI. Kwan went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, and three runs. Adell went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, and three RBI. Lowe's homer and sac fly gave him three RBI. Petey Halpin scored in the sixth when Ramírez singled Kwan home and Adell singled Halpin home. 11-1. Cleveland had 13 hits. Kansas City had seven, plus an error that did not even need to finish the job.

The Royals' afternoon was a first-inning single and then a long sit. Caglianone doubled and scored. Perez drove him in. Vinnie Pasquantino, Nick Loftin, and Kyle Isbel each found a hit and none of them scored. Messick did not need a shutout. He needed the first inning to be the only inning, and it was.

AthX Engine scored the 11-run club, not the first-inning lead

AthX Engine put Cleveland at 24 team fantasy points, second on Sunday's slate. Messick scored 18 pitching FP. Ramírez scored 12 hitting FP. DeLauter scored 10. Kansas City finished at -10 team FP. Nine earned on the starter will do that even when the club scores first.

Fantasy points measure the box. Price is what the market pays next. They are related. They are not the same number.

What's next

Cleveland stacked a 10-run win on a six-inning start and a middle of the order that did not stop. Kansas City has to move Lugo's 9.00-earned afternoon into the rearview and find a way to score after the first. Progressive Field did not offer a second plot.
