Four hits, no triple, and champagne in Cincinnati

They beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 and clinched a fifth straight National League West title. It is their 13th in 14 seasons. The only year they did not win the division in that stretch was 2021, when the Giants edged them. Since divisional play began in 1969, the MLB recap said, the Dodgers lead the majors with 24 division titles. They are 93-60. They already had a playoff berth on Monday, tying Atlanta's record of 14 straight postseason appearances from 1991 to 2005.

The ESPN recap had him allowing seven runs, nine hits, and four walks in 3 1/3. That is a clincher start from the other dugout.

Sal Stewart homered to right in the bottom of the fourth, his 32nd, off Blake Treinen. 7-1. It was Cincinnati's first run. It did not change the math. Rojas homered to left-center in the ninth, his fourth. 8-1. Juan Brito grounded Stewart home in the bottom half. 8-2. Stewart finished 2-for-4 with the homer. TJ Friedl had two hits. Elly De La Cruz went quietly. The Reds are 71-82.

A bullpen game that looked like a rotation

It was a scheduled bullpen game. Justin Wrobleski opened it and did not allow a baserunner in three innings. Zero hits. Zero walks. Three strikeouts. Thirty-two pitches. That is how a club that has used October as a habit gets through a Thursday in September without burning a starter.

Tucker was a triple short. Freeman went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, and two runs. Muncy went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Rojas had two hits, the homer, two runs, and an RBI. The offense that the MLB recap called a season-long inconsistency problem scored in the first, the second, the fourth, and the ninth. On a clinch day, that is the version you keep.

Fourteen straight Octobers, and the bar does not move

President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, per the MLB recap: "You get so mired in each year, it's hard to have any perspective. We've had our share of troubles this year. Things where we had to work harder than we expected on a couple of fronts. But the important thing is how we finish and how we go into October."

Manager Dave Roberts, per the same recap: "There is certainly a higher expectation when, if you don't win the World Series, you fail. But that's kind of part of what you signed up with the Dodgers." They are trying to three-peat. Milwaukee is 95-58 and holds the top National League seed by two games, with the tiebreaker. Los Angeles has a 9 1/2-game lead on San Diego in the West. The division is done. The seed is not.

The ESPN recap said Edwin Díaz finished his minor-league rehab assignment and will be activated this weekend. That is a bullpen note for October, not for Thursday. Thursday was Tucker, a 7-0 fourth, and a clubhouse that has done this enough times to know the next bottle is the one that matters.
