Brewers 7, Mariners 4: Six in the First, Mitchell Closes the Series

Six runs before Kirby could breathe

August 20, 2026 - Milwaukee - Two days after a 22-0 that matched a modern shutout record, the Milwaukee Brewers did not need another historic blanking. They needed the first inning.

George Kirby walked the leadoff man and gave up six hits before he could find the strike zone. Gary Sánchez doubled in two. Joey Ortiz singled in another. Garrett Mitchell doubled in two more. David Hamilton doubled in Mitchell. 6-0. The Seattle Mariners were already chasing a rubber game that felt decided.

Final: Brewers 7, Mariners 4. Milwaukee took two of three and extended its home series win streak to seven.

Gasser bent. The bullpen did not.

Robert Gasser was handed a six-run lead and could not finish the fourth. Brendan Donovan doubled in two. A passed ball scored another. Dominic Canzone singled in a run off Chad Patrick. 6-4 after four, and Pat Murphy had already lifted Gasser mid-at-bat against Randy Arozarena.

Patrick (7-4) threw 2 1/3 scoreless with four strikeouts. Aaron Ashby followed with two hitless innings and four more strikeouts. Trevor Megill retired the side in order in the ninth for his 23rd save. That is how a messy starter outing still becomes a series win for the best record in baseball.

Mitchell added the insurance himself: a 420-foot solo homer to center in the eighth off Jhonathan Díaz. He finished 3-for-4 with three RBI. Kirby (8-10) lasted 3 1/3 and was charged with all six first-inning runs.

From 22-0 to 7-4, same week, same building

Tuesday was the record. Thursday was the grind. Same club. Same home park. Different shape. Milwaukee did not need 22 runs when six in the first and a lockdown bullpen were enough to take the series from a Mariners club still trying to forget the shutout.

Brock Rodden singled in the second and has a hit in each of his first six major league games. That is a nice personal note inside a loss that started with six unanswered runs.
