Four runs in, and Milwaukee still had the night
October 24, 2026 - Milwaukee - The first batter of World Series Game 2 reached on a throw that bounced. The second struck out. The third singled in a run. The fourth singled in another. Then Liam Hicks hit one to right-center, 411 feet per ESPN, and the Tampa Bay Rays had four in the first.
The Milwaukee Brewers still won 5-4. Sal Frelick tied it in the sixth. Cooper Pratt put them ahead in the seventh. Aaron Ashby struck out Yandy Díaz on a checked swing with the tying run at third. Milwaukee leads the series 2-0.
American Family Field, roof closed, 71 degrees. First pitch 7:09 p.m. Attendance 43,245. Three hours, 38 minutes. Milwaukee finished with 11 hits and 12 left on. Tampa Bay finished with seven hits, one homer, and one runner thrown out at the plate. That is the file.
"If we're down, we're not out," Frelick said in the MLB recap.
Pratt's throw, then Hicks's fly
Logan Henderson had the ball for Milwaukee. Díaz chopped to Pratt. The throw skipped past Jake Bauers. Díaz to second. The Associated Press recap called it Pratt's fourth error of the postseason, Milwaukee's ninth in 10 games.
Jonathan Aranda struck out swinging. Chandler Simpson bounced one through the middle, Díaz scoring. Simpson stole second. Junior Caminero singled to Jackson Chourio, Simpson scoring. 2-0. Hicks then went the other way. Two runs. 4-0. Richie Palacios struck out. Jonny DeLuca lined to Chourio. Four runs, three hits, one error, nobody left on.
One of those four was unearned. Henderson still had three earned on the board before he recorded the third out.
Drew Rasmussen did not get a clean inning either. Chourio singled to Victor Mesa Jr.. Bauers singled, Chourio to third. Christian Yelich struck out swinging. The Associated Press recap said Aranda then let William Contreras's foul pop bounce out of his mitt near the netting. Contreras bounced an RBI single to the left of Palacios, who had taken a step toward the bag. Chourio scored. Bauers to third. 4-1.
Brice Turang lined to Palacios. Garrett Mitchell lined to Mesa. Bauers scored. Contreras to third. 4-2. Pratt struck out swinging. Two runs, four hits, two left on. The Associated Press recap called it the highest-scoring World Series first inning since Game 4 in 1993.
"It's a huge at-bat," manager Pat Murphy said of Contreras in that recap. "That first inning meant something that we bounced back against a pitcher that good."
Henderson lasted three. Rasmussen lasted 3 2/3.
Henderson got through the second with a walk, a sacrifice, and two strikeouts. Mesa had reached. Taylor Walls bunted him over. Díaz and Aranda both went down swinging. The third was three up, three down: Simpson to Mitchell, Caminero foul to Contreras, Hicks to Frelick.
Three innings, three hits, four runs, three earned, one walk, four strikeouts, 64 pitches, 45 strikes, one homer. No decision. Three innings is not a quality start. Quality start still means six innings and three earned or fewer.
Rasmussen put up zeros in the second and third. Frelick lined to DeLuca. David Hamilton flew to Simpson. Chourio grounded to Palacios. Bauers and Yelich struck out in the third. Contreras singled. Turang grounded to Aranda. Then the fourth opened under him.
JoJo Romero had already thrown a clean top of the fourth for Milwaukee: Palacios to Chourio, DeLuca an infield single off Romero, Mesa to Turang, Walls looking. Milwaukee still trailed 4-2 when Pratt walked with one out in the bottom. Frelick lined to Mesa, Pratt to third. Hamilton bounced one that went under Aranda. Pratt scored. 4-3. Chourio grounded to Caminero, Frelick to third, Hamilton to second. Bauers walked to load them. Cam Booser took over. Yelich grounded to Palacios. Rasmussen: 3 2/3 innings, six hits, three earned, two walks, four strikeouts, 89 pitches, 56 strikes. No homer. The error run still sat on his line as earned because the walk and the single had already put Pratt on third.
Chourio's throw, Frelick's 18-second trot
Dustin May threw the fifth. Díaz to Hamilton. Aranda doubled to Frelick. Simpson moved him to third. Caminero bounced to Pratt. Inning over. Booser then walked Turang and flew Mitchell and Pratt to DeLuca. The 4-3 held.
DL Hall hit Hicks to start the sixth. Palacios bunted him to second. DeLuca struck out on a foul tip. Mesa bounced one to Chourio. Hicks tried to score. Chourio threw. Contreras tagged. The Rays challenged the play at the plate. The call stood. Hicks was out. The Associated Press recap called him slow-footed and noted two other Tampa Bay misplays that could have been errors, plus Aranda's official one.
Ian Seymour came on for the bottom of the sixth. Frelick worked a nine-pitch at-bat, the Associated Press recap said, and drove a fastball over the center-field fence, 408 feet per ESPN. His first homer in three months. He had gone 103 plate appearances without one since July. He circled in 18.72 seconds.
"I don't think he knows what it's like to hit a home run to dead center, so I don't think he knew if he got it or not," Bauers said in that recap.
4-4. Blown save for Seymour. Hamilton and Chourio struck out. Bauers walked. Yelich dumped one that Simpson deflected, Walls picking it, Bauers to third. Tyler Wells got Contreras to bounce to Caminero. Tie game, still.
Turang to third, Pratt through right
Abner Uribe walked Walls to open the seventh. Walls stole second. Díaz struck out. Aranda grounded to Turang, Walls to third. Simpson grounded to Bauers. Zero hits, one walk, one strikeout, the inning dead at third.
Wells stayed for the bottom. Turang lined a double to DeLuca. Mitchell flew to Mesa, Turang tagging to third. Kevin Kelly inherited that runner. Pratt lined to Mesa. Turang scored. 4-5.
Pratt stole second. Frelick flew to Mesa. Hamilton grounded to Palacios. The go-ahead run was Pratt's, the same shortstop whose first-inning throw had started the mess. Wells took the loss, 0-2: two-thirds of an inning, one hit, one earned, eight pitches. Kelly: 1 1/3 innings, two hits, no earned of his own, one walk, the inherited run on the board.
Uribe got Caminero to Pratt to start the eighth. The win put him at 1-0. 1 1/3 innings, no hits, no earned, one walk, one strikeout, 26 pitches, 18 strikes. Ashby struck out Ryan Vilade and got Palacios to Turang.
Chourio singled to DeLuca in the eighth and stole second. Bauers flew to Simpson. Yelich walked. Chourio stole third, Yelich second. Contreras bounced to Walls. Chourio was out at home, Walls to Nick Fortes. The Brewers challenged. The call stood. Contreras stole second. Steven Matz got Turang to line to Simpson. Milwaukee left two more. The lead stayed one.
Ashby, a double, a checked swing
DeLuca doubled to Frelick to open the ninth. Mesa struck out swinging. Ben Williamson grounded to Turang, DeLuca to third. Díaz checked a swing. Strike three. Save No. 3. Ashby: 1 2/3 innings, one hit, no earned, no walks, three strikeouts, 28 pitches, 16 strikes.
Díaz, in the MLB recap, through an interpreter: "It is frustrating. We didn't do our job and score more runs to help out our pitchers."
Hicks finished 1-for-2 with the homer, two RBI, and the hit-by-pitch. Simpson went 1-for-4 with an RBI, a run, and a steal. Caminero went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run. DeLuca went 2-for-4 with the ninth-inning double. Aranda went 1-for-4 with the double, two strikeouts, and the error. Díaz went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts and the first-inning run.
Frelick went 2-for-4 with the homer. Pratt went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, a run, a steal, and the error. Chourio went 2-for-5 with a run and two steals. Contreras went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a steal. Turang went 1-for-4 with the double, a walk, and the run Pratt drove in. Bauers went 1-for-3 with two walks and a run. Mitchell's first-inning single drove in Bauers.
"They believe and they don't give up," Murphy said in the Associated Press recap. "They just keep going."
The Associated Press recap called it Milwaukee's seventh comeback win in nine postseason victories, and the second time this October the Brewers had come back from 4-0, after Game 4 of the NLCS against the Dodgers. Milwaukee has won seven straight. Of the 57 previous clubs to take a 2-0 World Series lead, that recap said, 46 won the championship.
"We got beaten in all phases of the game," DeLuca said in the Associated Press recap. "We love playing at the Trop. It's a unique place."
Monday, the Trop, Peralta and Gasser
Game 3 is Monday night at Tropicana Field. MLB's schedule lists Freddy Peralta for Tampa Bay and Robert Gasser for Milwaukee. First pitch is 8 p.m. ET. Neither club has won a World Series. Milwaukee has two of the four it needs. Tampa Bay has to win four of the next five.
Aranda, in the Associated Press recap: "We've had moments like these throughout the regular season and we've been able to flip the page. So we just have to do that here."
