First pitch of the game. Last pitch of Snell's night.
October 14, 2026 - Los Angeles - Blake Snell threw the first pitch of National League Championship Series Game 3 before half the seats were full. Jackson Chourio did not wait for the second one. He turned on a fastball and sent it 391 feet to right-center. 1-0. Milwaukee. The Associated Press recap on ESPN said it was Snell's first pitch of the night and, six innings later, Garrett Mitchell hit his last.
The Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium and took a 3-0 lead in the NLCS.
Clear. 79 degrees. Wind 4 mph, out to center. First pitch 5:09 p.m. Attendance 50,708. The game lasted 3 hours, 2 minutes. Milwaukee finished with nine hits, three homers, and no extra-base hits that were not homers. Los Angeles finished with five hits, zero homers in the series, and one inning that felt like a swing until it wasn't.
A year ago the Dodgers swept Milwaukee in this round. The Brewers have not let them score without answering in two nights.
Five scoreless, then three walks and a wall
Robert Gasser started for Milwaukee. He was not the loud part of the night. He was the part that kept it 1-0 long enough for the loud part to arrive.
Five innings. Three hits. Zero runs. One walk. Three strikeouts. Seventy-two pitches. He hit Shohei Ohtani in the fourth and walked Miguel Rojas in the fifth. Neither scored. Ohtani hit sixth, the lowest he has batted since joining Los Angeles, the Associated Press recap said. The Dodgers still had traffic in six of nine innings. They did not cash it until Gasser was gone.
Abner Uribe took the sixth. He did not have a strike to give. He walked Teoscar Hernández. He walked Kyle Tucker. Max Muncy, in for Andy Pages, struck out. Then he walked Ohtani. Bases loaded. One out. Will Smith had come in hitting .043 in the series, the same recap said. He doubled off the top of the wall in left-center. Teoscar scored. Tucker scored. Ohtani to third. 2-1, Dodgers.
Dodger Stadium believed for about twelve minutes.
DL Hall inherited two runners and none of Uribe's walks. He struck out Enrique Hernández. He froze Tommy Edman. The 2-1 stayed 2-1. Hall would throw 2 1/3 scoreless before the night was done. The win would be his, 3-0.
Eleven pitches, then one that did not miss
Snell had settled. After Chourio's leadoff shot, Mitchell walked and Cooper Pratt singled in the second. Then Snell retired 14 in a row, six of them on strikeouts. He looked like the two-time Cy Young winner the Dodgers had paid to start an elimination-adjacent October game. He was one inning from handing a 2-1 lead to the bullpen.
Andrew Vaughn opened the seventh with a seven-pitch walk. Christian Yelich ran for him. Jake Bauers stepped in and would not get himself out.
The MLB recap said he saw 11 pitches. He fouled off the eighth, ninth, and 10th. The 11th was a fastball that caught too much plate. Bauers turned it 412 feet into the right-field pavilion. 109.4 mph. Yelich scored. Bauers scored. 3-2, Brewers.
"Hat's off to him," Snell told MLB.com. "I mean, what an at-bat. I threw everything I had."
Mitchell was on deck. He did not wait for the inning to breathe. He hit the next pitch 428 feet to right-center, 111.5 mph. 4-2. Snell was done: 6 innings, 4 hits, 4 earned, 9 strikeouts, 2 walks, 3 homers, 101 pitches, the loss.
"Super sick," Mitchell told MLB.com from the on-deck circle. "What more can you say?"
Pratt singled after that. Luis Lara flied out. Joey Ortiz lined into an unassisted double play at first, Freddie Freeman catching it and stepping on the bag. The inning ended 4-2. The park had already gone quiet.
A wild pitch, a ninth-inning single, and a 3-0 series
Evan Phillips threw a clean-enough seventh after the homers: one hit, no runs, 10 pitches. Roki Sasaki started the eighth and did not finish it. Brice Turang chopped an infield single to third. William Contreras singled to center. Turang to third. Justin Wrobleski came in for Yelich and bounced a wild pitch. Turang scored. Contreras to second. 5-2.
Yelich struck out. Bauers took a called third strike. The extra run still sat on the board.
Ohtani singled in the bottom of the eighth off Hall. Smith flied to Lara. Hall's night was over: 2 1/3 innings, one hit, zero runs, two strikeouts, 28 pitches. Trevor Megill inherited the ninth after Pratt lined a single and Ortiz punched another through left with two strikes. Pratt scored. 6-2. Chourio grounded to the mound. Megill then lined Enrique Hernández to right, struck out Edman, and struck out Mookie Betts on a foul tip. Save No. 4. 1 1/3, no hits, two strikeouts.
The Associated Press recap said the Dodgers had trailed 3-0 in a best-of-seven only once before, when Baltimore swept them in the 1966 World Series. MLB.com put the rest of the math on the page: 42 clubs have fallen behind 3-0 in a best-of-seven. Two have forced a Game 7. One has come all the way back, the 2004 Red Sox.
"We didn't expect to be in this position," Enrique Hernández told MLB.com. "This one sucks. We've got to find a way to turn the page quick, because tomorrow is going to be here pretty fast. If we lose, we're done."
Tucker, in the same recap: "This team's won four games before. That's what we're going to have to do."
Chourio, through interpreter Daniel de Mondesert: "We have yet to complete anything."
Thursday, Glasnow, and a series that needs a miracle
Game 4 is Thursday at Dodger Stadium. Tyler Glasnow is listed to start for Los Angeles. Milwaukee's starter was not posted on the MLB schedule feed when the card went up. The ALCS is in Cleveland the same night: Griffin Jax against Gavin Williams in Game 3, series tied 1-1.
Los Angeles has not homered in this NLCS. Milwaukee has answered every time the Dodgers have scored in the last two games, the MLB recap said, five comeback wins already this postseason. Bauers told MLB.com they play for each other. That is the simple version. The box score version is three Milwaukee homers, one Los Angeles double that lasted one inning as a lead, and a 3-0 hole for a club trying to three-peat.
AthX Engine after the baseball
AthX Engine (our projection and scoring system) put Milwaukee at 13 team fantasy points on a 6-2. Gasser had 14 pitching FP. Megill had 10.33. Hall had 9.33, which is what 2 1/3 scoreless and a win look like after you strand two in a blown save. Pratt and Chourio led hitters at 6. Bauers and Mitchell sat at 5. Los Angeles sat at -3. Snell still scored 5 pitching FP in a loss because six innings and nine strikeouts do not vanish when three balls leave the yard. Fantasy points measure the night.
