The lead
May 28, 2026 - Baltimore - Yohendrick Piñango drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning, George Springer scored the tiebreaking run, and the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in the first AL East matchup of 2026, per the Associated Press recap on ABC News.
Louis Varland recorded four outs for his eighth save—stranding two runners when catcher Brandon Valenzuela picked off Pete Alonso to end the eighth without Varland facing a batter. Toronto has won 10 of its last 14 games.
How the game turned
Andrés Giménez homered in the third for a 1-0 Toronto lead. Coby Mayo tied it with a solo shot in the fourth off Patrick Corbin.
The game stayed 1-1 until the eighth. Springer doubled, was bunted to third, and was intentionally passed over when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked. Anthony Nunez (2-2) walked Daulton Varsho to load the bases, and Piñango worked a full-count walk to force in Springer.
Baltimore threatened in the bottom half when Alonso's chopper bounced high for an infield single with two out and two on. Tyler Rogers left with an apparent injury on the play, but Valenzuela picked Alonso off first to escape the jam.
Pitching and matchup notes
Corbin allowed one run on four hits in five-plus innings. Orioles starter Chris Bassitt—facing his former team—gave up one run on four hits over six innings. Jeff Hoffman (4-3) earned the win in relief.
The clubs combined to go 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 15 runners, per Field Level Media.
AthX Engine graded Toronto at 6 team FP with Varland at 7.33 pitching FP and Jeff Hoffman at 6 pitching FP. Mayo led Baltimore hitters at 5 hitting FP.
Bats that changed the board
Giménez's homer was his fifth of the season; Mayo's was his fifth. Springer set up the winning rally with a double and scored without a hit in the frame. Baltimore outhit Toronto 8-6 but could not push across the tying run after the seventh.
AthX Engine fantasy angle
A 6 team FP win on a walk and a pickoff shows how AthX Engine values relief efficiency even when the offense stalls—Varland's save line plus Hoffman's hold mattered more than any single bat on a 2-1 night. Daily scoring remains separate from dynamic pricing.
What comes next
The series continues Friday with Trevor Rogers (2-6) on the mound for Baltimore, per AP.
