Six innings. Four hits. Seven strikeouts. Two walks. Zero runs. Anthony Volpe’s RBI double and Max Schuemann’s two-run double built a 3-0 lead in the second. Then Cole and the bullpen made it hold until Chase Meidroth’s two-run homer in the ninth made David Bednar’s save No. 22 interesting. The New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2, per the Associated Press.

Alexander Kay (7-5) took the loss. New York moved within 1½ games of idle Tampa Bay in the AL East and won for the fifth time in six games. Jasson Domínguez reached three times.
