July 29, 2026 – Chicago – Jordan Hicks walked toward the dugout after leaving three Yankees on base in the top of the 12th. The White Sox had spent most of the night chasing a four-run first inning. One run would now win it.

Edgar Quero singled home that run.

Quero singled to center off Ryan Yarbrough, scoring Tristan Peters and giving the Chicago White Sox a 6-5 win over the New York Yankees at Rate Field. Chicago won despite collecting only six hits. Two of them came on consecutive pitches in the eighth, when Sam Antonacci and Munetaka Murakami erased a three-run gap with back-to-back home runs.

The walk-off kept the White Sox 1 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland in the American League Central. It also denied New York the kind of win that seemed settled after four batters and secure for most of Cam Schlittler's start.

Four batters gave New York a four-run lead

The Yankees struck before Chicago starter Davis Martin could settle in. Ben Rice reached, Jasson Domínguez moved him to third and Paul Goldschmidt singled Rice home. Spencer Jones followed with a three-run homer into the left-center-field seats.

Four runs. One out. Chicago spent the rest of the game trying to erase New York's first-inning lead.

Jones' homer traveled 380 feet and was his third of the season. He later singled and stole a base, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs. The Yankees collected nine hits in the game, but that first-inning burst accounted for almost all of their scoring before extra innings.

Martin did not let the opening frame spread into the rest of his night. He completed six innings, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six. That work mattered. Chicago could not have come back if its starter had allowed New York to keep adding runs.

Schlittler gave Chicago almost nothing

Schlittler retired the first 11 White Sox hitters. He mixed power with control and did not permit a hit until Chicago had already watched nearly four perfect innings pass.

The right-hander entered the seventh with a shutout. Murakami drew his only walk, extending his on-base run to 15 games. Andrew Benintendi then doubled to right, scoring Murakami and moving Miguel Vargas to third. Chicago had its first run, but Schlittler's night still looked complete.

He left after 6 1/3 innings with two hits, one run, one walk and eight strikeouts. No White Sox starter or reliever produced a matching line. Chicago won because its bullpen kept the score close and its hitters changed the game after Schlittler left.

That distinction matters. The White Sox did not solve Schlittler. They survived him.

Two home runs erased seven scoreless innings

Paul Blackburn took over New York's 4-1 lead in the eighth. Chase Meidroth reached ahead of Antonacci, who pulled a two-run homer to right. The score was suddenly 4-3.

Murakami stepped in next and drove a 404-foot homer to center. Chicago had gone from three runs down to tied without making an out between the two swings.

The order of those home runs carried as much weight as their distance. Antonacci's shot cut the deficit to one. Murakami tied the game before Blackburn could reset. A lineup that had two hits against Schlittler had tied the game on consecutive pitches against the bullpen.

Neither team scored in the ninth or 10th. That pause did not calm the game. It only moved the next mistake into extra innings.

The 11th produced two runs without a hit

New York started the 11th with its automatic runner at second. Anthony Volpe lifted a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to right, bringing Ali Sánchez home for a 5-4 lead.

Chicago answered with the same runner rule and a mistake. Murakami began the bottom half at second, then scored when Sánchez made an errant pickoff throw. The Yankees had reclaimed the lead without a hit. The White Sox tied it without one.

The top of the 12th asked Hicks for something harder. New York loaded the bases with one out. Hicks struck out one hitter, then escaped the inning without allowing a run. He gave Chicago a chance to win with a single instead of asking the lineup to erase another deficit.

Peters began the bottom half at second. Yarbrough got one out, but Quero lined his next pitch into center. Peters scored before New York could attempt a play at the plate.

Hicks earned the win after his scoreless inning. Yarbrough took the loss. Quero took the moment everyone will remember.

Schlittler's score explains how close New York came

AthX Engine (AthX's projection and scoring system) credited Schlittler with 23.33 pitching fantasy points. His 6 1/3 innings, eight strikeouts and one earned run made him the game's top individual scorer even though New York lost.

Jones added nine hitting FP through his homer, three RBIs, single and stolen base. Chicago won the AthX Engine team score 10-3 because the late home runs and walk-off outweighed New York's early burst at the team level.

Chicago protected first place the hard way

The White Sox had lost the first two games of the four-game series. They also trailed Wednesday's game 4-0 before their first hitter had completed a second plate appearance. Another loss would have tightened the division race and rewarded New York for one big inning.

Instead, Martin stopped the damage, Benintendi drove in Chicago's first run, Antonacci and Murakami tied the game, and Hicks escaped the 12th. Quero finished a comeback that required all of them.

New York can take Schlittler's work into Thursday's series finale. The Yankees cannot take the win with it. Chicago stayed in first place because six hits were enough when the last one arrived at exactly the right time.
