Four pitches, bases loaded, series won
July 30, 2026 – Chicago – For 10 innings, Rate Field looked like a pitchers' clinic that refused to end. Sean Burke and Ryan Weathers had already left. The Yankees had taken the lead in the 10th. Andrew Benintendi had tied it. Nobody had found a clean way to finish the series.
Then the 11th loaded the bases the slow way.
Munetaka Murakami took an intentional walk. Sam Antonacci beat out an infield single. Fernando Cruz struck out Colson Montgomery after falling behind 3-0. Tristan Peters stepped in and watched four pitches miss.
Chase Meidroth, the automatic runner, scored. The Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees 2-1 in 11 innings for a second straight extra-inning win and the series.
Burke and Weathers erased the middle of the game
Burke threw six scoreless innings with three hits, two walks, and 10 strikeouts. He has been this sharp for eight straight outings: 4-1 with a 1.43 ERA, 67 strikeouts, and nine walks in that stretch. Thursday was another version of the same plan. Miss barrels. Attack the zone. Leave with a zero.
Weathers matched him and then some. Seven scoreless innings. Three hits. Four strikeouts. Three walks. One hundred six pitches. New York's left-hander left with the game still 0-0 and the bullpens holding the rest of the night.
AthX Engine put Burke at 25 pitching fantasy points and Weathers at 21. Those are top-of-slate starter numbers. Neither man factored in the decision. Both men set the terms: one run was going to be enough if the late innings stayed clean.
The 10th traded free runners and one big single each
New York broke the shutout first. Anthony Volpe started the top of the 10th at second. Trent Grisham singled him home for a 1-0 lead. It was Grisham's second hit of the day and the first run either club had pushed across in regulation-plus.
Chicago answered with the same automatic-runner rule and a pinch-hit that mattered. Peters was already in scoring position when Benintendi singled him home. The game was tied again before either bullpen could claim the night.
Randal Grichuk added two hits for Chicago. Murakami kept reaching, stretching his on-base streak to a career-high 16 games. The White Sox did not overwhelm New York. They refused to leave empty when the extra-inning rules gave them a runner.
Cruz walked into a corner he could not exit
Seranthony Domínguez threw a scoreless top of the 11th for the win. That put the pressure back on Cruz and a Yankees bullpen that had already watched Wednesday's 6-5 loss in 12 innings slip away.
Chicago loaded the bases without a hard-hit ball that cleared the infield. An intentional walk. An infield single. A strikeout that only delayed the problem. Peters never swung. Four pitches. Four balls. Meidroth scored standing up.
A walk-off walk is not glamorous. It is decisive. After two straight extra-inning losses in Chicago, New York left town knowing it had outlasted almost nothing about the final pitches.
AthX Engine scored the duel, not the walk
AthX Engine (AthX's projection and scoring system) treated this game as a pitching showcase. Burke's 25 FP and Weathers's 21 FP sat second and tied for third on the full Thursday pitcher board. Chicago's team score of 6 FP beat New York's 0 because the White Sox won and scratched across two runs in extras.
Fantasy points measure performance under platform rules. Share prices also respond to market activity through dynamic pricing. Two elite starter lines can land in the same recap as a bases-loaded walk, and only one of those things decides the series.
Chicago opens space in the Central
The White Sox took the last two games of the four-game set and moved two games ahead of Cleveland in the American League Central. First place is still fragile in July, but two walk-off wins against the Yankees is how clubs start believing the standings.
New York fell 3 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East. The Yankees open next against the Cubs with Will Warren on the mound. Chicago heads to Tampa Bay with Erick Fedde.
Burke will not care that his 10-strikeout night ended without a decision. Peters will not care that his at-bat never left the bat. Rate Field only needed the last free base.
