WBC 2026: Superstars Shine as USA Holds Off Mexico 5-3 in Thriller

The "U-S-A!" chants were booming. The Mexico fans were deafening. And in the end, the U.S. was the better team in the most hyped game of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. In an electric atmosphere at Daikin Park in Houston on Monday night, March 9, 2026, Team USA defeated Mexico 5-3 in a thrilling Pool B showdown between WBC rivals. Paul Skenes said: "I think it would be hard to find another atmosphere like that outside of a tournament like this. It just doesn't happen in the regular season, I don't think. That was cool to be a part of." The superstars came through: Skenes pitched four shutout innings with seven strikeouts in his WBC debut, Aaron Judge hit his second homer of the Classic and had a clutch outfield assist, and Roman Anthony crushed a three-run homer that proved to be the difference-maker.

Anthony said: "It was an unbelievable environment. For me at least, it's the loudest game I've been a part of. Just amazing to get baseball like that this early in the year. And always great when you win." All five of USA's runs came in the third inning: Judge's two-run homer to right, then Anthony's three-run shot to right-center that drove in Kyle Schwarber and Cal Raleigh for a 5-0 lead. Skenes, the 2025 NL Cy Young winner, allowed just one hit and hit 99.7 mph on his fastball. Mexico mounted a late comeback—Jarren Duran hit two home runs, in the sixth and eighth, to cut the deficit to 5-3—and got the tying run to the plate in the ninth. Garrett Whitlock shut the door, and Team USA moved to 3-0 in pool play with one game left, against Italy on Tuesday.

Mexico manager Benji Gil said: "We were facing what everybody has considered a superteam. And yet they battled and battled and battled—and we were one swing away from tying the game." He added: "I hope we play the U.S. again. That would be awesome. I would be ecstatic to face them again. I want to face them more than I want anything else in the world. … Face them again in Miami. I think we'll end up 1-1 against the U.S. this tournament. And Mexico won't lose again until three years from now." USA manager Mark DeRosa said: "Ton of respect for Mexico and Benji. Their team is a legit team, bottom line. Great game, great atmosphere." The U.S. has not technically clinched yet—it faces Italy Tuesday; the U.S., Mexico, and Italy could still finish in a three-way tie at 3-1. Mexico (2-1) faces Italy on Wednesday and must win to have a chance to advance.
