WBC 2026: Puerto Rico Rides 5-Run Fifth to Shutout of Colombia at San Juan

WBC 2026: Puerto Rico Rides 5-Run Fifth to Shutout of Colombia at San Juan

Puerto Rico opened Pool A with a 5-0 shutout of Colombia on Friday, March 6, 2026, at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan. The game was scoreless and hitless for Puerto Rico through four innings; then Team Rubio broke through with five hits and five runs in the fifth. Seth Lugo (Royals)—who calls himself "Quarter-Rican" for his grandfather's homeland—pitched four scoreless innings (3 H, 3 K). Five Puerto Rico relievers followed with four scoreless frames, and Edwin Díaz (Mets) closed the ninth to Timmy Trumpet, striking out the side in his return from the knee injury that sidelined him in 2023. Eddie Rosario (Braves) and Willi Castro (Twins) had key RBI hits in the big inning; Carlos Cortes and Darell Hernaiz (Athletics) started the fifth with Puerto Rico's first two hits. The top two teams from Pool A advance to the quarterfinals in Houston. Puerto Rico faces Panama on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET (FS1); Colombia faces Canada on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET (FS2).

How the game unfolded

The crowd at Hiram Bithorn was loud from the start—Puerto Rican icons Carlos Delgado, Pudge Rodriguez, Roberto Alomar, Carlos Beltrán, and Edgar Martinez took part in first-pitch ceremonies—but Puerto Rico had no hits through four. Seth Lugo matched Colombia's Jose Quintana (3 scoreless) and Adrian Almeida (1 scoreless), keeping the game 0-0.

In the fifth, Almeida ran into trouble: Carlos Cortes and Darell Hernaiz led off with Puerto Rico's first two hits; an error by Colombia third baseman Gio Urshela brought in the first run. Eddie Rosario followed with a hard-hit RBI single to right; Martín Maldonado added a run-scoring single; Willi Castro drove in another with an RBI double; and Heliot Ramos capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to the warning track. Five runs in the frame gave Puerto Rico a 5-0 lead that the bullpen and Edwin Díaz protected. Lugo said postgame that every inning he could feel the fans and that getting the W was "really special."
