WBC 2026: Panama Bounces Back to Down Canada 4-3, Keeps Hopes Alive
Panama—with its backs against the wall—shocked Canada with a come-from-behind 4-3 win in Pool A on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, in a game twice delayed by rain. Panama moved to 1-2 and kept its knockout-round hopes alive; Canada dropped to 1-1. The game started with a Logan Allen vs. Logan Allen dugout standoff (Panama's Logan Allen won); Panama then trailed 2-1 through five before a three-run sixth turned the game around. Josh Naylor dropped an easy throw from Abraham Toro at first to put runners on first and second with one out; Miguel Amaya singled with two outs to load the bases; Ruben Tejada (nine MLB seasons), pinch-hitting, looped a 3-2 single up the middle to tie it, and an errant throw by James Paxton on the relay allowed another run to score. Enrique Bradfield Jr. (Orioles No. 10 prospect) followed with an RBI single for a 4-2 lead. Bradfield had three hits and two stolen bases. Manager Ernie Whitt said: "You've got to play this game clean. You can't give extra outs, and we paid for it tonight."
Jaime Barria allowed two runs in 3 2/3 for Panama; the bullpen threw 5 1/3 one-run innings to seal it. Tejada said: "For my part, I've got to get ready when the time comes to do as best as possible and to help the team win. That's the main thing." Bradfield—born in the U.S. but with Panamanian heritage—said: "To represent the country, para representar el país, is everything to me. I want to play hard. I'm doing it for the entire group, for the people of Panama. I'm incredibly proud." Panama had lost to Cuba 3-1 and then on Darell Hernaiz's 10th-inning walk-off for Puerto Rico a day earlier. Panama faces Colombia Monday noon ET (FS2)—Paolo Espino will start to keep knockout hopes alive; Canada has an off day and faces Puerto Rico Tuesday 7 p.m. ET (Tubi). The top two teams from Pool A advance to the quarterfinals in Houston (March 13–14). Four of five teams in Pool A are still alive: Puerto Rico and Cuba are 2-0; Canada 1-1; Panama 1-2; Colombia (0-3) is eliminated.
How the game unfolded
Canada led 2-1 into the sixth. Naylor's error and Toro's throw opened the door; Amaya's single loaded the bases. With the Panama faithful chanting "Ruby, Ruby, Ruby," Tejada delivered the tying hit and Paxton's errant throw gave Panama the lead; Bradfield's single added cushion. Panama's pitching held from there. Whitt said the misplays hurt; Tejada and Bradfield said they were ready to help the team win. The 4-3 final gives Panama new life before Monday's game against Colombia.
Pool A context and what's next
Pool A at Hiram Bithorn in San Juan is one of the most balanced groups in the 2026 WBC. Puerto Rico and Cuba (both 2-0) meet Monday 7 p.m. ET (FS1); Canada (1-1) and Panama (1-2) are still in the hunt; Colombia is 0-3. Pool play runs through March 11; every game will shape who reaches Houston.
