WBC 2026: Mexico Breaks Out Late to Top Great Britain 8-2 in Pool B Opener

WBC 2026: Mexico Breaks Out Late to Top Great Britain 8-2 in Pool B Opener

Mexico won its first-ever opening game at the World Baseball Classic by beating Great Britain 8-2 in Pool B on Friday, March 6, 2026, at Daikin Park in Houston. The game was tied 1-1 until the eighth inning, when Jonathan Aranda (Rays) hit a 346-foot three-run homer off a 96.8 mph fastball from Tristan Beck, scoring Jarren Duran and Randy Arozarena to break it open. Mexico added four more runs in the ninth. Nacho Alvarez Jr. had given Mexico an early lead with a solo homer in the second (394 feet off Jack Anderson); Harry Ford (Nationals) tied it with a solo shot in the sixth off Alex Carrillo (361 feet). A crowd of 29,724—mostly Mexico fans—saw the win. The top two teams from Pool B advance to the quarterfinals in Miami (March 13–14). Mexico faces Brazil next on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET (FS1); Great Britain faces Team USA on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET (FOX).

How the game unfolded

Mexico and Great Britain traded zeros and one run each through seven innings. Nacho Alvarez Jr. put Mexico ahead in the second with a solo home run—394 feet off a 97.1 mph fastball from Great Britain starter Jack Anderson—and that 1-0 lead held until the sixth. Harry Ford (Nationals catcher and a hero of Great Britain's 2023 WBC run) tied the game with a solo homer off Alex Carrillo that traveled 361 feet to left field.

Both sides had chances; Great Britain stranded six baserunners in the first six innings and nine total, and manager Brad Marcelino noted that cashing in on that traffic was critical against a team like Mexico.

The eighth changed everything. After walks to Duran and Arozarena off Gary Gill Hill, Jonathan Aranda came up with two on and crushed a three-run homer off Tristan Beck—346 feet off a 96.8 mph fastball. Aranda said he didn't know if the ball had enough distance until he heard the train horn in the outfield signaling a home run; he called it the fastest he'd ever run after a homer.

Mexico tacked on four more runs in the ninth to seal the 8-2 final. Manager Benji Gil said the Mexican fans' energy never wavered even when the game was tight—and that getting off on the right foot had eluded Mexico in all five previous Classics.
