A sellout ovation for a pitcher who might not come back
July 24, 2026 – Detroit – Comerica Park treated Friday like a farewell audition, and Tarik Skubal pitched like he was still writing the next chapter himself.
Season-high 12 strikeouts. One run in 7 1/3. Four hits. Two walks. He left in the eighth to a long ovation, with the Aug. 3 trade deadline hanging over every pitch. The Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 2-1, per the Associated Press.
Two early runs, then a hold
Beck Way (1-1) never settled. Detroit loaded the bases in the first. Riley Greene’s deep fly became a sacrifice that scored Colt Keith after Isaac Collins robbed a grand slam at the wall. Hao-Yu Lee singled home another. 2-0.
Kansas City’s only answer was Nick Loftin’s RBI double in the fourth after Salvador Perez scored. Skubal stranded the rest, including a third-inning jam where he struck out Carter Jensen and Lane Thomas with runners in scoring position.
Brenan Hanifee finished the eighth. Kenley Jansen closed the ninth for save No. 12.
