Tigers 2, Dodgers 1: McGonigle Walks It Off After Báez's Ninth

Báez ran one down. Then he started the winning rally.

August 29, 2026 - Detroit - Two outs in the ninth, Teoscar Hernández drove a ball to the deepest part of Comerica Park. Javier Báez sprinted over from left and caught it.

He led off the bottom of the ninth with a double. Max Clark bunted him to third. Jack Dreyer (5-2) walked Gleyber Torres on purpose, then walked Hao-Yu Lee by accident. Bases loaded.

Kevin McGonigle hit a fly that reached the warning track and bounced into the Dodgers bullpen. The winning run was on third, so the play was a single, not a ground-rule double. The Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1.

Kenley Jansen had thrown four pitches in the top of the ninth. He got the win (4-5). Dreyer got the loss. Blake Snell did not.

Ten strikeouts and no decision

Snell went five innings, three hits, one run, three walks, 10 strikeouts, 99 pitches. Detroit led 1-0 when he left. Báez had walked in the third, taken second when Max Muncy misplayed Clark's bunt, and scored on Torres' ground-rule double. Snell then struck out Dillon Dingler and Eduardo Valencia with the bases loaded.

Keider Montero matched him for 5 1/3. Alek Thomas doubled to lead off the sixth, moved up on Shohei Ohtani's groundout, and scored on Freddie Freeman's single. Mookie Betts singled, and Montero was done. Tyler Holton walked Muncy to load them. Tommy Edman bounced into a 6-4-3 double play. 1-1.

Andrew Sears kept it there into the ninth. Jansen recorded the last out of the top half. Detroit is 63-72. Los Angeles is 81-55. The better record left town with the L.

AthX Engine scored Snell's night and Detroit's two runs

AthX Engine put Snell at 17 pitching fantasy points, fifth among Saturday starters, in a loss his bullpen took. Detroit scored 6 team FP. The Dodgers finished at -1, which is what one run and 10 punchouts against your lineup looks like on a production board.

What's next

The clubs finish the series Sunday. Framber Valdez is lined up for Detroit. Los Angeles had not said whether Ohtani would pitch an inning, which would be his first mound work since July 3. Saturday did not need a two-way card. It needed one fly ball that stayed in the park, then one that did not come back.
